Woodward Dream Cruise: BMW Isetta 600 V8 Hot Rod

BMW Isetta V8 Hot Rod

Yes, this is a little BMW Isetta 600 with a supercharged V8 strapped to the back of it. I saw this car a few times over the course of my summer in Detroit, Michigan, and it was a showstopper every time. I finally caught up with the owner at the Woodward Dream Cruise, and he was hppy to tell me about the car. From what I can remember it has a supercharged Rover V8 and puts down around 300rwhp. That is a staggering amount for such a small car, and even more staggering for those tiny tires. The owner said he doesn’t really drive it fast because it cannot handle well with all that rearward weight, but as a cruiser it turns more heads than anything on the road. Obviously this BMW hot rod is completely unique, with custom airbrushing on top of its custom mechanical setup. This is just a fun car all around, and it was awesome to see in person. Enjoy the gallery.

Spotted! 1948 Ford F-3 Pickup Custom, Fairfield, CT

Courtesy of one of my family members, Sheryl Paul, here is this 1948 Ford pickup truck custom, in possibly the most searing shade of orange I have ever seen.  The custom job on this truck has turned it from mild to absolutely mean, with a stance that other duallies could only dream of.  The front bumper is gone and gives the front end a new lease on life–it looks quite special for a truck.  Genuinely, I wish we saw more trucks like this.

Spotted! 1950s GMC Panel Van, Skagway, AK

A few months ago, I found myself in a little town in Alaska called Skagway whilst on a cruise through Alaska with my family.  It’s in the middle of nowhere and only accessible by boat, yet a few cars have made it up there on the ferries, including this rather faded old GMC on a neglected side street outside of the main part of town.  It may be faded, beaten, and battered, but this car is older than Alaska’s statehood. Spotted! Subaru Wagon, Jerusalem, Israel

While on a two-week trip to Israel, I spotted this breathtaking Subaru station wagon on the very first day of the trip in Jerusalem’s impromptu art district not far away from the main market.  Normally such a car would not attract my attention (in fact, these wagons are everywhere in Jerusalem) but after a few seconds looking at this one, I bet anyone will agree that this is one special Subaru art car.  It seems to be a case of “make a garden out of the car”.  My compliments to the owner, who is on the left in the photo after the jump. Spotted! Dodge Omni Shelby GLHS, Newtown PA

Dodge Omni Shelby GLHS

Driving around Newtown and I found this rare beast sitting on the side of the road at a local shop. GLHS means “Goes Like Hell Some more”, over the normal Omni GLHS. I had never seen one of these before so this was a very cool surprise. More pics below.   Read the rest of this entry »

Spotted! SAAB 95, Greenwich, CT

Nick and I saw this little Saab station wagon while walking around Greenwich on the first day of the 2011 Concours (June 4th).  Strangely, this is a two-door station wagon that until a few years before it was replaced was capable of seating seven people.  To be honest, I’d rather not try that today.  Still, it’s a nice example and a reminder of what Saab used to be about.

Spotted! AMC Pacer, Carmel, CA

Nick and I spotted this oddball Seventies ride while walking around Carmel during Concours weekend.  The Pacer’s story is one of a car that was intended to be ahead of its time, but turned out to be a hodgepodge of components that made a poor whole (too much glass for the interior, one door longer than the other, ugly looks).  The Pacer has a following as an offbeat collector car, and seeing one on the street today is relatively uncommon.

Spotted! SAAB Sonnett, Greenwich, CT

SAAB Sonnett

While we were walking around Greenwich during the Concours this past summer, someone showed up in this Sonnett.  There aren’t a lot of these out there, and this one looked quite interesting in purple.

Spotted! Apocalypse Lincoln Limo, Carmel, CA

Who knew that a limo could be made to survive an apocalypse?

While in Carmel during Concours Weekend, pretty much anything in the world of cars is fair game.  Ferrari F430s become commonplace, Bentley Continental GTs clog all the roads, and a Honda Civic becomes a rare sight.  But, of course, there’s always something so unique and off-the-wall that no one expects to see it.  In this case, someone took a humble stretched Lincoln Town Car and turned it into something straight out of Jurassic Park, complete with a roof rack, forest camo paint, and a bull bar with fog lights.  A raised ride height and off-road tires complete the look on what is, in my personal opinion, the ultimate way to ride through the Apocalypse.

Spotted! Rolls Royce with green rug exterior, Dubai, UAE

Covered in grass

More from our friend Himanshu in Dubai. A Rolls Royce with a green rug exterior (I thought it was grass at first). I’m sure opinions will be divided on this, but it is certainly unique so it gets props for that.

Spotted! Heavily modified car, Marylebone, London, UK

Looks like a mini-Hummer. Probably a kit car, but really, really cool stuff here.

My uncle was out for a stroll and saw this little monster truck on the side of the road.  It looks like a Hummer hX concept, that’s been left in the dryer for one too many cycles.  Does anyone know if this is a body kit on some other car?  If it is, I give a hat tip to the owner, because he’s done an excellent job with it.
