A Prius, a Veyron, and an MP4-12C walk into a bar…

Tom Cruise and his Veyron on the red carpet

That is a silly title, I know, but it does beg the question as to why I would put those three specific cars together at all? The answer lies in how they all have a similar reason for their existence, to be a number. Each was meant to achieve some specific measure of performance that would define the car to the world. While all three have been successful in achieving their tangible goals they have all wound up becoming relics of a more regimented and boring existence. They all cater to an increasingly soulless and superficial world where people judge everything from a bunch of numbers on sheet of paper or a computer screen, and not so much from actual experiences.    Read the rest of this entry »

Something is up with BMW’s power claims

1M vs M3

Recently BMW has made a commitment to turbocharging their entire lineup in the name of efficiency. Many enthusiasts are skeptical that this move will serve to improve the cars, but I think otherwise. I have driven a few 335is and can say that BMW has gotten these boosted cars to deliver their power very smoothly. They are a far cry from the more crude turbocharged cars of old that were plagued by excessive lag and sudden onset power that could unset the car’s balance in a corner. These cars seem to be living up to the BMW reputation quite nicely, and have even shown some surprises that BMW executive wanted to conceal on paper in order to preserve demand for their other cars.     Read the rest of this entry »

Cars 101: Horsepower vs. Torque

These specifications found on all cars, but many people don’t really know what they mean, even if they know what sorts of numbers constitute a lot or a little. There is a very detailed answer for defining each of these terms but this is Cars 101 so we will keep it simple and applicable to what most people can recognize.    Read the rest of this entry »

Obscure Auto: Alfa Romeo 164 Pro-Car

Things aren't always what they seem--looks like a 164...goes like hell.

Most, if not all, car nuts know what the 164 was.  When it was introduced, it became the last non-roadster that Alfa sold in the USA.  However, it has a dirty secret hidden under its bodywork, one that turned this unassuming little Italian sedan into a fire-breathing monster.  Only one was ever built, but it survives to this day–the Pro-Car. Secondhand Saint: Dodge Ram SRT-10

The American Hero Itself, The Dodge Ram SRT-10

Pickup trucks are things that aren’t really supposed to outrun cars like the Porsche 911 or the Corvette in a straight line.  But, for a short period of time after the dawn of the 21st century, Dodge apparently thought otherwise, and set out to prove their theory. Read the rest of this entry »

Aston Virage. It’s great…but, why?

Aston Martin Virage, an apparition in the dusk

Aston Martin have come out with a new model called the Virage, which is supposed to “fill the gap” between the DB9 and the DBS. Having seen one in person recently, I can attest that it is a glorious car. The problem with it though is that there really wasn’t a market gap between the DB9 and DBS that needed to be filled in the first place.    Read the rest of this entry »

Challenger vs Camaro, the Stang will sit this one out, for now.

Camaro vs Challenger. Its High Noon in Texas, ladies and gentlemen.

Ever since Dodge rebooted the Challenger in 2008, muscle car enthusiasts have been absolutely rejoicing.  From the ho-hum V6 model (which, despite its faults, does sell) to the tire-annihilating SRT8, the lineup has always drawn my attention.  Meanwhile, across town, the boys at Chevy created the hot-selling new Camaro, which, with 432 horsepower from the SS, makes a clear (and powerful) case for itself.  The SRT8 happens to be one of the best performance bargains on the market right now, but the Camaro SS may be even better.     Read the rest of this entry »

Test Driven: Lamborghini Gallardo LP-560 Spyder

Lambo Gallardo LP560 Spyder. Video Inside

Of the six cars I drove on the Gotham tour the one I would want in my driveway has to be the Gallardo LP-560 Spyder. It offers all of that supercar feel, speed, performance, and image, but with none of the drawbacks of the Murcielago. Although because it lacks some of that outrageous idiocy, it is very different than its bigger brother for better and worse in various ways, but as a car, that will be driven in the imperfect and chaotic world, it is far better.   Read the rest of this entry »
