Test Driven: 2013 Buick Verano Turbo Premium

I really liked the Buick Verano when I drove it a few months ago because it was an entry level luxury car with its priorities in line. It offered a very high level of comfort, and solid quality for a very decent price, so there wasn’t much to complain about. However, if I had one criticism to make, it would be that the engine wasn’t really befitting of a luxury car. Its power was only passable, and despite GM’s best efforts, a shouty four banger can only be made so quiet. When it came time to merge onto the highway the Verano just felt stressed, and that is not something that will promote relaxation in the driver. I sort of looked the other way at all this because it was such a great value in other ways. Let’s face it, I didn’t really expect to find the epitome of luxury in a car costing only 23 grand. Happily, however, Buick has brought out a new, turbocharged version of the Verano, which hopefully would remedy any complaints on the standard model. I was quite excited when I first heard the Verano Turbo was coming out, and I remember chuckling at Jalopnik’s tag line “The Buick Verano Turbo just slapped your grandma in the face”, so I had to go try one as soon as they hit showrooms.  Read the rest of this entry »

Test Driven: 2012 BMW 135i

BMW has made its fortune on being a performance brand, and the 135i is the cheapest way to get the N55B30 engine in BMW’s lineup.  The 1-Series has been around since 2008 in America, and has been reasonably successful in the USA.  Since I felt like seeing what the turbocharged inline six felt like in BMW’s lightest 4-place car, the 1-Series was a natural fit.  I was not disappointed. Test Driven: 2011 SAAB 9-3X SportCombi

On December 18th, Saab Automobile filed for bankruptcy, bringing its 64 year offbeat history to an unfortunate end.  Saab enthusiasts are some of the most vocal and most possessive of their brand, and undoubtedly, they will mourn the loss of this name.  Around Thanksgiving weekend, I decided to add another car to my wagon test–Saab’s own wagon, the 9-3 SportCombi.  At the moment, it’s the only wagon Saab sells in the United States, and when I got to the dealer, the car I drove was already discounted by $9,000.  This amount is no misprint–and any new car marked down this much is either a demo, or the dealer seriously needs it off the lot (in this case, the latter).  But, when I started the engine, I forgot about Saab’s financial woes, and asked myself this question:  Despite all the gloom and doom, is this car actually worth buying right now? Premium Cars are fantastic, but foolish to buy brand new

BMW Showroom

Many people like the idea of buying a new car for various, often trivial, reasons. They may like the idea that nobody has possibly abused their car in the past, think it is the only way to have a full warranty, or maybe they just like saying they bought a new car. Regardless of their reasons, when it comes down to reality, these people are wasting thousands, sometimes even tens of thousands, of dollars that they could use elsewhere. This is especially true in the area of premium, high-end cars.    Read the rest of this entry »
