Spotted! 1948 Ford F-3 Pickup Custom, Fairfield, CT

Courtesy of one of my family members, Sheryl Paul, here is this 1948 Ford pickup truck custom, in possibly the most searing shade of orange I have ever seen. The custom job on this truck has turned it from mild to absolutely mean, with a stance that other duallies could only dream of. The front bumper is gone and gives the front end a new lease on life–it looks quite special for a truck. Genuinely, I wish we saw more trucks like this.

On Saturday afternoon, my brother, Matt Davis, took a few photos of a very out-of-place old Cadillac in the middle of Los Angeles. My brother happens to be a PhD. student in chemistry at Cal Tech in Pasadena (he, in fact, currently owns the Road Review Toyota Camry Hybrid) and saw this on Eagle Rock Boulevard near Chickasaw Avenue while out shopping. It’s an eggshell-white 1959 Series 62 coupe, which can be denoted by the lack of model script along the rear fenders and the large chrome spear along the middle of the bodyw0rk from the back of the front fender to the rear bumper. Great spot, Matt. Read the rest of this entry »
Spotted! Porsche 964 RS America, Greenwich, CT

Back in June of this year, I found myself eye to eye with this very special Porsche 964 RS America, possibly one of only 4 reported to be in this fly yellow color. These were stripped down versions of the normal 964, sans power steering, A/C, radio, and sunroof. It was intended to resemble the RS of the Seventies, which is a valued collectors item now. 701 were built. Simply put, this is one of many reasons people adore Porsche. Seen a block away from the Greenwich Concours.
Spotted! 1950s GMC Panel Van, Skagway, AK

A few months ago, I found myself in a little town in Alaska called Skagway whilst on a cruise through Alaska with my family. It’s in the middle of nowhere and only accessible by boat, yet a few cars have made it up there on the ferries, including this rather faded old GMC on a neglected side street outside of the main part of town. It may be faded, beaten, and battered, but this car is older than Alaska’s statehood. Read the rest of this entry »
Spotted! 1959 Ferrari 250GT California Spyder LWB, Greenwich, CT

It is number 1581GT, the 41st of only 50 made. According to Hemmings Motor News (in their December 2011 issue), the current owner, Thierry Morin, has had it since 2002, when he was the high bidder at Christie’s Pebble Beach auction in 2002, for over $1.2 million–it had less than 26,000mi when he purchased it from the previous owner, William Ruger Jr. The first owner, Alfred E. “Erwin” Goldschmidt, was a successful amateur racer, but Ruger took it off his hands when the car was about six months old. It is still a completely unrestored car and won Best Preserved at the 2005 New York Concour. It was shown as well at the 2008 Greenwich Concours and the 2011 Fairfield Concours. This is one find I will not soon forget. Read the rest of this entry »

Strangely, this is a two-door station wagon that until a few years before it was replaced was capable of seating seven people. To be honest, I’d rather not try that today. Still, it’s a nice example and a reminder of what Saab used to be about.

What a strange thing to see this late in the year, and it seems to be in decent shape as well.

Spotted! AMC Pacer, Carmel, CA
Posted: December 5, 2011 Filed under: SPOTTED!, Unique | Tags: AMC, American Motors, Brown, Cab-Forward, California, Carmel, Hatchback, Mind over motor, Pacer, Spotted!, Unique Leave a comment »Nick and I spotted this oddball Seventies ride while walking around Carmel during Concours weekend. The Pacer’s story is one of a car that was intended to be ahead of its time, but turned out to be a hodgepodge of components that made a poor whole (too much glass for the interior, one door longer than the other, ugly looks). The Pacer has a following as an offbeat collector car, and seeing one on the street today is relatively uncommon.

Spotted! Apocalypse Lincoln Limo, Carmel, CA
Posted: October 31, 2011 Filed under: SPOTTED!, Unique | Tags: Apocalypse, CA, Carmel, Jurassic Park, Limo, Lincoln, Mind over motor, Spotted!, Unique Leave a comment »While in Carmel during Concours Weekend, pretty much anything in the world of cars is fair game. Ferrari F430s become commonplace, Bentley Continental GTs clog all the roads, and a Honda Civic becomes a rare sight. But, of course, there’s always something so unique and off-the-wall that no one expects to see it. In this case, someone took a humble stretched Lincoln Town Car and turned it into something straight out of Jurassic Park, complete with a roof rack, forest camo paint, and a bull bar with fog lights. A raised ride height and off-road tires complete the look on what is, in my personal opinion, the ultimate way to ride through the Apocalypse.

Spotted! Ferrari 599 GTO, Dover, NJ

Leave a comment »Last winter, I was driving home from a haircut, and decided to take a path through Dover for a slice of pizza. I passed a local body shop and saw a red shape with the prancing horse in the corner of my eye–forcing me to then turn around and pull into the shop. I examined it, and it turned out to be this 599 GTO just sitting in the shop. This was the very first GTO I’d ever seen, which still makes it very special to me.
