Le Mans Winning Porsche 935 K3 Coupe at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

1979 Porsche 935 K3 Coupe at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the only Porsche 911 based car to have ever won the infamous Le Mans 24hrs. It is a 1979 Porsche 935 K3 Coupe, and the king of the “whale tail” era of classic Porsche racing cars. Because of its significant achievement, many people consider this specific 935 K3 to be the most significant 911-based car of all time.

We caught this legendary Porsche 935 K3 Coupe at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The car was, of course, totally swamped during the show, but we, being the clever and relentless folks that we are, waited by the exit after the show had ended to get fantastic, unobstructed shots of most of the cars in the show. I am extremely happy with how this set of photos of this 935 K3 Coupe turned out, and what’s more, we got to snack on lots of leftover gourmet food while we shot our photos. We literally had our cake, ate it too, and got to be up close and personal with some of the most epic automobiles of all time. A great day this was, to be sure.

2013 has been an interesting year for us at Mind Over Motor. They say that the third year of any venture is often a test, and it has been so for us as we continually try to balance our efforts toward growing the site and creating new content with the demands of our everyday lives. Many of you who’ve been following have probably noticed some changes we’ve made in the past few months, and there are more changes coming (for the better, of course!) in the new year as we continue to grow and find more fun things to share with all of you.

We attended some incredible car shows this year, and we saw some really fantastic cars. We compiled loads of content from each event, much of which we has shared, but a lot of which is still yet to come. Trans-Am Mustangs and Camaros at Laguna Seca

Before seeing these classic American beasts roar their way around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Nick and I traipsed around the paddock and surveyed the potential field.  While we were walking around, I took some snaps of some of my favorite Trans-Am racers, unsure if I would be able to see them on the track later.  Luckily, I not only got these shots, but was able to see these beasts battle it out on the tarmac later in the afternoon in the blinding sun.  After hearing these old muscle cars run, I was deaf for a few glorious hours.  Searing color, searing sounds, and a thumping exhaust note–just about everything needed to enjoy an afternoon on the track.  Enjoy the photos, and Happy Holidays. Ford GT40s at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance

Ford GT40 MkII at Amelia Island
Ford GT40 MkII at Amelia Island

The 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance featured a tribute to the legendary Ford GT40. I always say that many of the legendary cars we know and love today were originally created because Enzo Ferrari pissed someone off, and the GT40 is one such car.

Back in 1963 Ford went well into the process to purchase Ferrari, but Enzo pulled out of the deal at the last minute, after a lot of money had been spent by Ford to audit his company, because Ford would not allow Enzo continued total control over Ferrari’s racing division. Henry Ford II was infuriated by Enzo, and decided to get his revenge where it would hurt Enzo most, on the racetrack. With the help of Carroll Shelby, and many others, the Ford GT40 was born, and it unleashed a firestorm upon the Ferrari’s racing efforts, most notably winning the 24 hrs of LeMans four years in a row (1966-1969).

Seeing so many Ford GT40s in the same place was nothing short of an epic experience, and it made quite a good impression on my first trip to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. We look forward to returning this year, and can only hope for another display as spectacular as this one was. Enjoy the photos.

In truth, I find racing boring these days….

I have been asked more than a few times why there isn’t more motorsport coverage on Mind Over Motor. The title says it all. I think racing in our modern era pales in comparison to racing of old. Every single genre of auto racing, from Formula One to LeMans to Rally to NASCAR has been totally watered down over the years, and it has gotten to the point where it has not only lost the excitement, but also any semblance of relevancy to people in the real world.

Alfa Romeos from the paddock at Laguna Seca

Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 Race Car

There were a number of truly righteous Alfa Romeos occupying the paddock at Laguna Seca during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion this year. When it comes to vintage cars, Alfas are definitely among my personal favorite. They are some of the sexiest machines around, and back in the day, Alfa Romeo was a serious racing contender… before all of this Fiat Group hierarchy, everyone bow down to Ferrari, nonsense.

The Alfas in the pit lane were among the creme-de-la-creme of Alfa Romeos. We saw a Tipo 33/2 Race Car (pictured above), a TZ, a TZ2, and a very race-prepped Giulia Spider. For context, Alfa Romeo made just 112 TZs, and a scant 12 TZ2s. I’m not sure on the number of Tipo 33/2s that Alfa produced, but I’d bet it’s within the range of the TZ models.

Italian cars are able to make any setting look good. Enjoy the photos.

Chris Harris drives a BMW M3 DTM

BMW lets Chris Harris behind the wheel of their M3 DTM race car. It may look a bit like the M3 we all know on the surface, but really it is a unique race car from the ground up. Enjoy!

“Old No. 4” at Laguna Seca

At Laguna Seca, don’t go in with an expectation.  That’s not me being negative, that’s me being honest.  I only say this because you might come across a 550 Spyder, but then stumble on a piece of ancient automotive history like this racing Ford.  When I was photographing it, the entire area around it stank like spent old brakes.  Of course, that’s because someone had the guts (and the crazy) to drive this on Laguna Seca.  This happens to be a 1915 Ford race car, utilizing a 1915 Model T engine with 50 hp.  The list of tech pieces reads like something out of a horror film for racing, including a 12-speed transmission (via the use of a 2 speed planetary gearbox hooked up to a 3 speed Muncie transmission, then out to a 2 speed rear axle), a 2 wheel rear drum used as a service brake, and a pressure fed fuel system.  According to the owners, this bright yellow Ford can break 100 mph.  Judging by its minimal use of anything regarding bodywork, I’m not shocked at all about that.  What I was shocked about was that the driver got out, said hello, and was in one piece.  To the man who drove this car that day: I salute you, sir.  Enjoy the photos of this incredible little car. Amelia Island Festivals Of Speed: Ferrari 333 SP

Ferrari 333 SP

This Ferrari 333 SP was at the Festivals Of Speed event at Amelia Island last March. In the 1990s the 333 SP marked Ferrari’s return to sports car racing after around two decades absence. It competed in the prototype class, and while it never did too well at the 24hrs of Le Mans, it did see some decent success racing in America.

The 333 SP utilized a 4.0L V12 that was an enlarged version of the engine from Ferrari’s F92A Formula One car. It produced around 600hp in the 333 SP. Interestingly enough, Ferrari actually outsourced the chassis of this car to a manufacturer called Dallara, so you could say it is a sort of joint effort.

This is the first 333 SP I’ve seen in person. What an incredible machine it is!

Porsche 911 GT1 and Two 935s at Laguna Seca

Porsche 911 GT1
Porsche 911 GT1

While out at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion we were treated to a fabulous display of Porsche racing cars, one 911 GT1 and two 935s, including the famous 935 Moby Dick. Just seeing these race cars sitting in the paddock is incredible, but getting to see them in action out on the track was beyond any describable form of excitement. Enjoy the photos and the video.

The 2013 Scarsdale Concours d’Elegance

We attended the Scarsdale Concours d’Elegance last weekend. As always it was a wonderful event with a fantastic turnout, and the Fall leaves beginning to turn just made the pictures that much better. I’ll let the photos from the event do the talking from here. Enjoy.

2013 Monterey Motorsports Reunion: Ferrari 250GT SWB

The Motorsports Reunion at the famed Laguna Seca racetrack in Monterey during Concours weekend is a place where the phrase “expect the unexpected” is more true than anywhere else in the car world. This is a place where it’s no surprise to see a older Formula One car, a Porsche Le Mans racer decked out in the classic orange Jagermeister livery, and a Trans-Am era Chevrolet Camaro in the same place. However, I wasn’t necessarily expecting to see a pristine Ferrari 250GT SWB in the paddock. Nonetheless, this bright yellow piece of Italian craftwork sat in the side of the paddock, sharing space with a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster. Against the gray sky and flanked by a blue Porsche racer, calling it a standout would be a bit of an understatement. Enjoy the photos.
