Singer 911 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering

Singer 911 at the Quail Lodge

The folks at Singer Vehicle Design used the Quail to showcase their newest engine available in their custom 911s. It’s a 4.0L Flat Six, and produces a mighty 390hp. In a car weighing only around 2,600lbs, that is quite a good amount of power. In terms of power-to-weight ratio, the new 4.0L Singer actually bests the current Porsche (991) 911 GT3. But unlike the new paddle shift only GT3, the Singer offers drivers the essence of the traditional 911 driving experience.

Because the Singer 911 is basically an old-school 911 that has been made brand new, I actually prefer it to new Porsches overall. Having said that, though, I should point out that you could have four 991 GT3s for the same money as a single bespoke-built Singer 911. But that isn’t my point. What the Singer proves is that there is still a demand for the old-school Porsche driving experience. That is something Porsche should really consider when developing their new products.

PDK is a great gearbox, it really is, but it dulls the driving experience. In the real world, sports cars are about fun, not lap times or performance numbers. And if I’m going to have a special car to drive on sunny days, why on Earth wouldn’t I want to be as immersed in the experience as possible?

That total immersion in the driving experience is what the Singer 911 offers. And the Singer does it in a manner that these new PDK-only Porsche models cannot ever hope to match. I don’t care how fast the new GT3, Turbo, or GT2 911s are, if they’re only available with PDK, then I’d take a Singer any day.

Is The Cayman GT4 The Salvation Of Porsche’s Manual Gearbox?

Porsche Cayman GT4

In 2013 Porsche released the (991) 911 GT3 without even the option of a manual gearbox. They put all of their chips in the PDK basket, and then watched as the value of older manual-equipped 911 GT3s skyrocketed.

We’re talking $160,000+ for a 997 GT3 RS and over $300,000 for a GT3 RS 4.0.

Could Porsche have been wrong about the consumer’s desire for PDK? And does the new manual-only Cayman GT4 signify that Porsche may be back-pedaling a bit?

2015 Porsche Panamera Turbo S Executive Reviewed (8/10)

Porsche Panamera Turbo S Executive Front

The Turbo S Executive is the big mac-daddy of the Porsche Panamera lineup. It seems to take all of the best aspects of other Panamera models and put them together with an extra helping of horsepower. The Turbo S Executive is an immaculate vehicle in every way possible. But it had better be, considering the price… $240,000 for the one I drove.

The Panamera Turbo S is an awesome and complex automobile, full of gadgets and cutting edge technology. I could go on for days about all that, but it’d get us nowhere with the one truly relevant question… is this Panamera worth spending nearly a quarter of a million dollars for?

Porsche 959 at the 2014 Scarsdale Concours

Porsche 959 Front Angle

When anyone wants to find the origin of where modern supercars came from, the Porsche 959 is not just a great place to start looking. It is the only place to start looking. In 1985, when Porsche put the 959 on the market, most of its technical equipment wouldn’t have been out of place 25 years later. All-wheel drive, traction control, adjustable ride height, and twin-turbocharged propulsion were all on the standard features list, and almost all of those features can be found on today’s 911 in some way, shape, or form. It was a groundbreaking car not only for Porsche, but for the entire automobile industry–and it was so good that Porsche didn’t lend the NHTSA examples for crash testing, so the Reagan administration disallowed its legal sale in the United States. Luckily for us, it’s been 25 years since then, and the 959 is now fully legal on our shores without having to go through the Show and Display Act proceedings of years prior. Only 337 of these were made, and I’ve seen 3 or 4 of them since 2011, although this was the first one I’ve seen in silver in some time. In the sunlight of Scarsdale, NY, this 959’s time had come to shine for the public. Enjoy the photos. Continue reading Porsche 959 at the 2014 Scarsdale Concours

Our Picks, the $40,000 question

In today’s market, $40,000 marks a sort of barrier between “normal” cars and “luxury” cars. You can basically find any sort of car for under $40 grand, so it can be argued that nobody needs to spend more than that unless they’re interested in fluff. It is a realistic budget for many middle class Americans, and that is why we have chosen to kick off our new “Our Picks” segment with it.

We will give our picks for two $40,000 budget scenarios, one as an only car, and the other as a second car. We will also give our second choices for each. Keep in mind, this is how we would spend our own money, with our rather discerning tastes in cars, and not necessarily our recommendations for more average buyers.

Why would you buy a new Porsche 911?

Porsche 911 Carrera with options

In every segment there seems to be one car that sets the bar, the standard by which every other car like it is judged. For the white-collar sports car enthusiast it has long been the Porsche 911. For thinking buyers, however, that may no longer be the case.

I’m not going to complain about the 911 in the way most Porsche purists do, I’m fine with the electric steering, I’m fine with it being water cooled, and I’m even fine with it gaining some size. My gripe really only concerns what buyers get for the price. The car itself is fantastic, but now you’re paying a lot more money for something that really hasn’t changed all that much over the years.

Frankly, the Porsche 911 has become boring and cliche. They don’t even turn too many heads anymore because it feels like there’s a 911 everywhere you look. Maybe it’s the fault of the Cayenne and Panamera for making the Porsche brand more commonplace, or maybe it’s the fact that so many people have bought 911s because it is such a great car. Either way, though, the basic 911 just doesn’t seem worth the kind of money Porsche is asking these days.

Epic Road Cars at Laguna Seca

Porsche 917 and 918 Laguna Seca

There are always some extremely tasty cars in and around the paddock at Laguna Seca during the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. In addition to some of the most legendary racing cars of all time (see that Porsche 917 above), you are also likely to find many awesome road cars, everything from classic gems to the most current hypercars.

The action in the Paddock was especially good this year. We’ll show you the racing cars later on, but we wanted to start with the road cars, which were quite a spectacle. Enjoy!

Porsche 918 Spyder spotted in Carmel Valley, CA

Porsche 918 Spyder at the Quail Lodge Porsche 918 Spyder in Carmel Valley

Porsche was actually holding test drives of this 918 Spyder, for those who were invited because they had access to a credit line of at least $1,000,000. As you might imagine, Al and I couldn’t weasel our way into this one, but here are some consolation photos of the car. I just love the 918.

Porsche Carrera GT spotted in Carmel, CA

Red Porsche Carrera GT in Carmel front

While we remain busy catching up from our time California, we’ll continue to bring you some of the awesome sights from the streets around the Monterey area during car week. Downtown Carmel, CA is sheer craziness on Friday and Saturday evening, with stunning supercars everywhere you look.

We caught this Guards Red Porsche Carrera GT cruising down Ocean Avenue in the thick of the insanity. The Carrera GT is still one of my favorite modern supercars because its V10 engine sounds magnificent and it may well represent the pinnacle of the manual transmission in a high performance car.

Enjoy!
