David Freiburger Talks Cooper Mud Terrains

Here’s some tire talk with David Freiburger of HOT ROD Magazine. Most people forget that DF is a massive off-roading guy and he’s quite knowledgeable about Jeeps and what to do with them for fun. This was an interesting watch and I happened to learn a lot from watching Dave talk about mud-terrain tires. I think you may find this informative as well. Enjoy the video.

Nick and I had a free day instead of Concours Sunday at Amelia, as they moved the show up a day due to the fear of a rainstorm. Luckily, the weather stayed nice, so we just took a ride down the coast for no good reason (which is as good a reason as any). On our way back, we came across this nicely-preserved 1964 Pontiac GTO, proving as always that the originals are always the best.

Cadillac is not a brand known for being popular with Millennials who are looking at luxury transportation. No matter how good their cars are (and for the most part, they’re far better than they were when I was in high school), people of my generation, for the most part, have stayed away–preferring either Buicks (shockingly enough), Audis, and Lexuses. I’ve also seen an increasing number of well-heeled fellow twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings chasing after the usual BMW and Mercedes suspects. Who says some Malaise can’t show up at a Concours? I say, bring it on and bring it often. This baby blue Cadillac was chock full of people and looked right at home amongst its million-dollar brothers and sisters, happily making its occupants smile.

Sometimes, you should expect the unexpected. This time, Nick and I were just moments from our hotel. about to relax for a bit before a night of karting and general tomfoolery before Concours Saturday. As we turned off the main drag for the airport into our hotel parking lot, Nick grabbed my attention at the left-turn lane–it was an old Quattroporte. What we have here is a stunning example of Eighties excess, and the last hand-built Maserati sedan before they left the USA market (to return later). 1985 Peugeot 205 Turbo-16 Up For Auction at Amelia Island

RM Sotheby’s had quite the smorgasbord of classic cars up for auction this year at Amelia Island. This 1985 Peugeot 205 Turbo-16 is a Holy Grail-type car for Eighties turbo addicts and Group B rally enthusiasts alike. Packing a 16-valve turbocharged four mounted right behind the seats, this little rally homologation special shared almost nothing with its more plebian brother save for some of the body panels. The final sale price was $156,800–well short of its projected $200K+ selling price. In any event, the new owner walked away with a true piece of history. Enjoy the photos. This may be the best-looking 1975 Eldorado Convertible I’ve seen.

I love big old Cadillacs. It’s hard for me to figure out why, but it must be because they are the ultimate expression of 1970s American extravagance, with excessive engine sizes, massive bumpers, questionable handling characteristics, and oodles, just oodles, of sheetmetal. The Eldorado shown here is a gorgeous cardinal red color, which was quite a sight next to the Lamborghini and and Packard flanking it on either side. Of all the cars in the car corral at Radnor last fall, this one still stands out in my mind as a fantastic drivable classic. Enjoy the photos of this ultimate interpretation of Big Red. 1932 Auburn 12-160A Speedster at the 2017 Radnor Hunt Concours

Auburn was a featured marque this past year at Radnor and luckily for us all, Auburn owners in the area delivered in fine style. This deep jewel green 1932 V12-powered speedster looked incredible in the flesh at the Radnor Concours. It’s one of just twelve equipped with the V12 engine and this particular boat-tail body style. These were cars built truly for the aristocracy, with 84 of this body style rolling out of the factory in 1932. These were fine cars in their day, and are even more highly regarded now. I especially love the dark green finish–everyone talks about the stunning pastels that show up in all of the glossy calendar shots, yet this deep, attractive finish was probably more of the time period and gives this large roadster a real sense of panache. Flower Power! Chrysler had a brief foray into the hippie market in the late Sixties, but it didn’t last all that long. Too bad for the rest of us, but when one of these Barracudas with the paisley top shows up, it grabs a lot of attention. They even came with inserts for the seats. Although few were made, they represent a quirky time in history when flower power wasn’t exclusive to just VWs. It’s no ‘Cuda, but this little ponycar wannabe sure can take us all for a ride.
