When Buick hit 1949, they were still using the smooth-running, classy straight-8 engines for which they’d become known over time. The big Roadmaster was their flagship ride, with acres of style, chrome, and good cheer. Even though the Fifties hadn’t quite hit yet, the lines of the 1949 model would be somewhat of a preview of what was to come from GM’s near-luxury brand. Fast and Furious 4/5 Dodge Charger at the 2016 Amelia Island Festivals of Speed

For anyone who is a fan of Vin Diesel, fast cars, or the Fast and the Furious franchise, I have a special treat for you. This year, at the Festivals of Speed in Amelia Island, someone brought along the hero car from FF4 and FF5. This Dodge Charger, although set up for movie stunts and lacking a proper Chrysler V8, is the sole surviving car from the film shoots and was used for the beauty shots and promotional material. It has no interior, unless a roll cage, racing seat, and nominal dashboard counts. It’s packing a 350 under the hood with a simulated supercharger (not real), for reliability reasons–and so that parts are easier to come by. This one-off Cadillac was built by Pinin Farina for Norman Granz, founder of Verve Records. Granz admired the Italian designs of the day, and wanted such a car for himself, so he had Pinin Farina work their magic on his Cadillac Series 62. The result was this distinctly Italian masterpiece that surely turned many-a-head around Hollywood.

Popping My Autocross Cherry

As a car guy, who’s had a license for a decade now, I really should have been autocrossing at some point, right? But until this past weekend, I hadn’t… at least at an official event.

Autocross is one of the best things anyone who takes driving seriously can do for their skills behind the wheel. Even if you’re not a gearhead, it will just make you a far better, far safer driver, knowing how to control your car.

Honestly, I’ve been meaning to get into autocross for years, but I’ve always put it off for some reason. I even bought and modified my first (very rusty) Miata with the idea of autocrossing in mind. I did do a lot of, shall we say, “unofficial” autocrossing in that car in various corporate parking lots in my area, but a real event is totally different.

Now, having just gotten my 2014 Miata, Ace, back from the body shop after it nearly being totalled 4 days after I bought it, I felt it was time.

A bright sunny day and a red Ferrari roadster, it’s the stuff dreams are made of. The 550 Barchetta is quite a hot item right now, along with most stick-shift Ferraris at this point. Barchettas are very rare too, with just 448 of them built, so it’s always awesome to see one in person.

Oldsmobile made some fantastic cars during the early Seventies, but the 4-4-2 was the crowning acheivement for them in the muscle car era. My favorite of the bunch are the later models, which packed the enormous 455 cubic inch big-block V8, a four-speed manual, and dual exhausts, not to mention wild racing stripes, a massive set of grilles, and catchy color-keyed alloy wheels, which Oldsmobile would continue to offer as a sporting option on other cars until 1988, when their RWD coupes were finally killed off for good. The Cobra is one of those automobiles that took two separate ideas and combined them, creating an entirely new idea. When Carroll Shelby married a small-block Ford V8 to the chassis of the AC Ace roadster, a star was born–with loud engine notes and lots of tire smoke. It’s 1946, and in the wake of the catastrophic Second World War, France had spitefully banned cars from former Axis countries from the Salon de l’Automobile. However, Battista “Pinin” Farina, founder of Pininfarna, had worked too hard preparing his 1942 chassis for the 1946 show to miss it. He went to Paris in this Alfa, and he parked it right in front of the show for all to see. I’d imagine it drew more than a little attention.

Seventy years later, Mr. Farina’s bespoke Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 dropped my jaw at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. It’s the detail work that really sets it apart. I mean, just look at that interior, or the chrome portholes on the side, or that steering wheel, my God!

This Alfa is awesome, a spectacular car with a great story. Enjoy the gallery.

Bobby Isaac’s #71 Dodge Charger Daytona at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours

Much has been made of the fact that the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona was the first ever NASCAR racer to break the 200MPH top speed barrier. While it was the #88 Buddy Baker car that managed this feat, this red #71 was of other fame. Bobby Isaac, one of the finest drivers of his era, drove this very car to the Grand National championship trophy in 1970, the last year of the aero car’s dominance before NASCAR shut the party down.
