1955 Chevrolet Bel-Air Nomad at the 2015 Concours of America at St. John’s

Two-door station wagons are among the black sheep of the automotive world here in America. Europe has produced them on and off for decades, but our region of the industry really never produced this unique body style. Luckily, the most famous one we ever pushed out of the factory gates happens to be quite a striking piece. Most people remember the first-generation of the Chevrolet Nomad as the 1957 model, complete with tri-tone paint, spinner hubcaps, a 283-cubic inch Small Block Chevy, and chrome almost everywhere. While it’s a fantastic-looking piece of American history, the ’55 “Box Chevy” probably works best of all the Tri-Fives in the Nomad’s two-door-wagon configuration. Slammed Chevy Corvair at First Class Fitment

Slammed Chevrolet Corvair at First Class Fitment 3

It may be unsafe at any speed, but this Chevy Corvair looks damn good just sitting still. Fully customized with some rustic treatment on the body panels and a set of contrasting clean wheels, this Corvair had a unique flavor about it. Among the sea of spotless show cars at First Class Fitment this year, it definitely stood out as an island unto itself.

Well done!

Reaction: 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV

chevrolet-bolt_ev_2017_800x600_wallpaper_01

$30,000 gets you 200 miles of electric driving. Well played, Chevy, well played.

It would seem the new Bolt EV is prepped to lead the way for the affordable AND viable electric car. The Nissan Leaf was a complete joke, people, this isn’t. Now let’s all hope there’s no “GM catch” to the Chevy Bolt down the line that will ruin it.

Likes: GM seems to have gotten the price and the range just right for what buyers have been yearning for in an electric car.

Dislikes: Marry Barra still seems to think it’s all about “beating Tesla”. Elon Musk wouldn’t have released Tesla’s patents to the whole industry if he didn’t want everyone to play his game. Her somewhat brawny attitude about beating Tesla makes me wonder if the mindset behind the Bolt is good GM or bad GM. Let’s hope they didn’t cut too many corners so they could be first to market in the $30K range, before the Tesla Model 3 hits.

Sir, is that a legal road vehicle? Roadkill: Talk to our lawyers…or maybe don’t.

Roadkill is probably my favorite YouTube show at this point–and even when the post a video on Christmas Day, people still watch it. This time, they take the stock car that’s been hinted at for the entire series on-and-off (which their lawyers refused to let them put on the street for very obvious legal reasons), and make a “street legal” car out of it, by way of using a body with a VIN and a license plate, and dropping it on the chassis. They then take it to a dirt track–but I’m going to say no more so you, dear viewer, can find out what happens.

Chevrolet Nova spotted on the PA Turnpike

1969 Nova Mild Custom

On our way home from Radnor, Nick and I were looking for anything interesting on the highway, and this old Nova turned up making quite an entrance. I’m a sucker for the compact Chevy from the late Sixties and early Seventies–because of their low weight, a built small block or most mild big blocks can turn a rather ho-hum little car into a terrifying little rocket of a car. This brown one packed a loud V8 and traction bars underneath the leaf springs, as well as some sweet torq-thrust wheels and nicely-done white letter tires–all in all, a clean looking old Nova packing some punch. I genuinely wish I saw more of these.

Muscle Cars at the Original Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank, CA

1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS:SS

So, as all of you readers know, I was in Los Angeles during Thanksgiving week visiting my brother Matthew and his fiancee, Rachel. After a delicious meal of sushi that evening in Burbank, we started to notice a whole bunch of American hot rods (old and new) passing us by on the streets outside. It didn’t take long for my interest to become piqued by the sounds of pushrod V8s and high-lift cams, so my brother said, “Let’s go check it out after dinner.” Thankfully, my flight wasn’t slated to leave until midnight, so we went out to the scene over at the original Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank, where the meet was going down.

Over Thanksgiving weekend this year, I finally got to cash in my birthday present from last year–my brother Matt agreed to take me to the Los Angeles Auto Show if I’d come visit him. I decided that it would be foolish to say no–after all, I’d been going to the New York Auto Show for a decade and a half, and I’d never seen the show in Los Angeles. Sorry, New York crew–but the LA Auto Show is indeed better. It’s cleaner, the city doesn’t smell like a New Jersey sewer, there’s real parking (and they charge only twenty bucks, whereas New York charges whatever they darn well please), and there’s even some ride-and-drives (which I did only two, but will definitely drive one of those two cars again soon). We’re Thankful For Track-Focused Muscle Cars (Camaro Z/28 vs. Mustang Shelby GT-350R)

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating today!

To celebrate, here’s a video that will make you thankful for track-focused muscle cars. The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 dropped jaws when it came out a few years back, and now Ford wants to decimate it with their new Mustang Shelby GT-350R.

Who do you think will win?

1971 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible at the 2015 Radnor Hunt Concours

It seemed like this year in particular, there were plenty of great representatives from the muscle car era at the Radnor Hunt Concours. When I think of the C3 Corvette, I usually come up with the late 1960s models like the ZL-1 and the L88 series cars with the 427. For whatever reason, probably because this engine was so famous for being the big option in the Chevelle SS, I occasionally forget about the 454 being an option in the ‘Vette after it launched in 1970. 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 at the Concours of America 2015

This isn’t just any run-of-the-mill split window Sting Ray. C2 Sting Rays are probably the most highly sought-after Corvettes of the brand’s sixty-plus year history, but the 1963 model can claim fame as quite a great story. The split window was a one-year option on the 1963 model year only, and that this is a Z06 and a development mule makes our featured car here a great story itself. The Exotic Car Circle at the Concours of America

LaFerrari Concours of America

These are our highlights from the exotic car circle at the Concours of America in Michigan. There was a gorgeous LaFerrari present (one of 2 at the event), a Porsche 918, and an Aston Martin Lagonda sedan, to name a few. It was quite a nice showing.

There are a ton of incredible cars in the Detroit area, with quite a bit of wealth concentrated outside the city itself. This was my second time at the Concours of America, and it has delivered spectacularly both times. Definitely worth the trip to Michigan if you have the time in late July.

Enjoy the gallery!

1967 Chevrolet Camaro spotted in Royal Oak, MI

While Nick, Shane, and I were eating dinner, a bunch of the local cruising-scene regulars started turning up all over Woodward Avenue. Luckily for us, this rumbling, street-terror 1967 Chevy Camaro coupe rolled into our parking lot, and it looked great with its slick black paint, power-dome hood, Draglite wheels, and Mickey Thompson ET Street rubber. Someone treats this old machine quite well, and that made me a happy camper after scarfing down a delicious French Dip earlier. Enjoy the photos of this classic pony car.
