Look at this beautiful Ferrari 456M GT we saw at Lime Rock

Ferrari 456M GT Lime Rock 1

I love the Ferrari 456, especially the post-facelift 456M, and ESPECIALLY the GT model that has a proper Italian gated manual gearshift. I think it’s a breathtakingly beautiful car with its crisp yet elegant lines, and I love that it’s the quintessential recipe for a V12 Italian grand touring car. I also love that it represents the upturn for the Ferrari brand after some questionable offerings during the 1970s-80s. Ferraris have only continued to get better and better, and in many ways it began here.

While hypercars like the LaFerrari and F40 get a lot of the limelight, the backbone of Ferrari’s road-going models has been GT cars since the early 1950’s. The 456 is a proper Ferrari in the most classical sense. Its got plenty of room in the back for your stuff, and a symphonic V12 howl at the front, what a perfect way to travel and experience life to the fullest.

Seeing this Ferrari 456M GT at Lime Rock reminded me of why I always loved this car. The blue/tan color combo, the gated manual, and that 442hp V12, it was absolutely ideal.

Enjoy the photos!

My Drive in a BMW i8: A Concept Car for the Street

BMW i8 Review 4

I’ve been itching to get my hands on a BMW i8 ever since I first saw it, and the chance finally came. As a car blogger working to grow my following, it’s still a very special occasion when someone is willing to throw me the keys to a six-figure set of wheels. As you might expect, it’s awesome to get to live the dream, even if it’s only for a little bit.

The BMW i8 is a total show-stopper. More of a UFO than a car, people go crazy when they see it out on the street. Most of them won’t even know what it is, but they will know that it’s something very, very special.

Highlights from the Scarsdale Concours d’Elegance

Porsche 918 Scarsdale Concours 5

We attended the Scarsdale Concours d’Elegance yesterday, and the turnout was great considering the iffy weather. This is a highlight reel, focusing on the details of the whole show. Look for individual galleries of many of these cars in the future. As you might imagine, the orange Porsche 918 Spyder above was the center of attention. Also, that American Flag Stingray is the car from the movie Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Turnout to the show was a little light this year, but the cars present were all of staggering quality. It figures that the people who really want to be at the show would also have the best stuff.

Enjoy the gallery!

Spyker C8 Spyder at the Radnor Hunt C0ncours

Spyker C8 Spyder Radnor Hunt 1

Spykers are immaculate hand-crafted sports cars made in Holland, and they’re quite rare. Luckily, this one shows up at many local car shows, so we get to see it a fair amount. Get a load of that pleated leather interior and the exposed gear linkage.

Enjoy!

Consulier GTP at the Lime Rock Sunday In the Park: EDIT – Warren Mosler Responds

Mosler Consulier Limerock 1

The Internet is a funny place, folks. Sometimes you write something about an obscure car you saw at a car show, and then get a response from the very person who created that car. Well that’s exactly what happened here.

I saw this Consulier GTP at Lime Rock over Labor Day weekend, and I wrote the segment below after some quick research for context on the car. Evidently, Mr. Mosler had some issues with what I found, and hey, who else would know better than him, right?

I haven’t altered anything here. I wanted to let the man himself say his piece about the car he created. I have left my original words intact below along with his responses.

Read it for yourselves, and see what you come away with:

McLaren 675LT at the Radnor Hunt Concours

McLaren 675LT Radnor Hunt Concours

One of the many gems in the car corral, though I think few other cars present could keep up with this hardcore McLaren. Despite not being a P1, the 675LT is a biblically fast car.

RUF CTR3 at the Greenwich Concours

RUF CTR3 Greenwich Concours 1

“Hey, sweet Cayman you got there, dude!”

That’s not what you say to the owner of one of these insane machines. This is no mere Cayman, my friends, this is a RUF CTR3. Sure it’s made of Porsche bits, like all other RUFs, but this is a car they made themselves. The front of the car comes from the Porsche 997 GT3 RS, but the whole rear structure is bespoke, and not from a Cayman as you might expect.

The CTR3 is the ultimate RUF Supercar. With around 700hp coming from its twin turbocharged, 911-derived 3.8L Flat-6, it was one of the fastest cars on the planet when it hit the streets in the late 2000’s. In a time when the 1,001hp Bugatti Veyron was still outlandish, the CTR3’s 3.1 sec 0-60 sprint and 233mph top speed was rivaled by very few. It’s still damn fast today, we just now live in a world where people in Teslas everywhere can run 0-60 in 2.7 sec, and it’s totally crazy.

This is the first and only RUF CTR3 I’ve ever seen in person. RUF planned a max production run of just 50 units, and I’m not sure they ever completed it, so it’s is extremely rare.

Enjoy the pics!

Jaguar F-Type R AWD: A Cat Tamed By Four Paws?

Jaguar F-Type R AWD Review 1

I’ve been lucky to have driven a few Jaguar F-Types in the last few years. I drove the V6S and V8S models when they first came out, and then I drove the R Coupe a year later.

I think my biggest takeaway was just how much crazier the V8 was, with all that extra power going to the rear wheels. It was fast, like scary fast, and there was always the sense that it was testing the limits of its rear tires. It really kept me on my toes, and that made it really, really exciting.

Unfortunately, exciting doesn’t bode well with the safety concerns of modern automakers. We enthusiasts were hoping Jaguar would give us the V8 F-Type with a manual gearbox. Instead, they left the V8 models automatic-only, and took away our rear wheel drive. I guess that’s the price we pay for getting our hopes up.

So, has Jaguar tamed the beast? Have they neutered the big cat?

A very wet Lamborghini Miura at the Greenwich Concours

Wet Lamborghini Miura Greenwich 3

It rained like hell at on the 2nd day of the Greenwich Concours this year. We spent most of our time enjoying wine tasting, eating our fill of as many (free) lobster sandwiches as we could stomach. When the rain did die down, we got photos of the cars, most of which are seldom photographed when soaking wet.

Here are some wet shots of this black Lamborghini Miura. You won’t see one shown like this in the RM Auctions catalog, that’s for sure.

Enjoy!

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione at the Amelia Island FOS

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione Amelia Island FOS 1

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cars we’ve been blessed with this century thus far. I mean, just look at it. The quintessential essence of the Italian Sports car, this 8C was deep red with a body of sleek curvaceous sexiness.

Many people tend to think right to Ferrari, but remember, Alfa Romeo is the real “Original Gangsta” of Italian sports cars. Enzo Ferrari raced Alfas himself, and his race team, Scuderia Ferrari, saw legendary success with Alfas before they were able to build their own cars after the War. Alfa Romeo was where so much of what we hold dear about Italian cars now all started, and the 8C Competizione marked the return of greatness to the brand. Greatness Alfa continues to push for today with the 4C and the Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Feast your eyes!
