McLaren F1 GT at NYIAS 2015

In 1995 the McLaren F1 GTR dominated the 24 hours of Le Mans, beating out purpose-built prototype cars for a 1st overall victory. This feat has never been accomplished since by any road-car-based GT class car. And when I say McLaren “dominated” Le Mans that year, I mean they finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 13th positions overall. Not bad for a modified version of a road-going supercar, which was never initially intended to go racing.

With that huge victory, the folks at McLaren were inspired to give the F1’s racing their all. That meant the car needed to be lightened even further and optimized for racing duties. Aerodynamics were key, and they wound up elongating the F1’s shape into what became known as the “Longtail.” McLaren also managed to take another 135kg out of a car which was already absurdly lightweight. The F1 GTR Longtail was quite an accomplishment, no doubt, and went on to be quite successful in the 1997 season.

In order to compete in racing, McLaren had to build a road-going version of the Longtail, dubbed the “McLaren F1 GT.” Just three F1 GT’s were built, the green prototype (seen here), a red one, and a black one. The green prototype, “XP GT”, has been retained by McLaren themselves, while the other two F1 GTs currently sit in private collections.

McLaren was kind enough to let the world see XP GT at this year’s New York International Auto Show. For me it was a dream come true because I’ve been lusting over this very car since I was a kid. It simply is gorgeous in person.

White Alfa Romeo 4C at Radnor Hunt

Radnor Hunt Alfa Romeo 4C

Alfa Romeo had two gorgeous 4Cs on display at Radnor Hunt this year, each with a white over red color combo. White looks fantastic on these cars, and I think I’d even have it over red, especially with that red leather interior.

The Alfa 4C is such a great little car, just a shame they don’t offer it with a stick.

And now we bring you our second round of highlights from the 2015 Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance. These were some of the more modern cars on the field, everything from supercars like the Porsche 959 seen above, to a Dodge Charger with a 426 Hemi under the hood. The Radnor Concours was really great this year.

I’m now fiending for a blue on blue Lamborghini Huracan Spyder

Bright blue has always been my favorite color on a Lamborghini, in varying shades, over the years. From a turquoise Countach in the 1980s to now this epic blue on blue/black Huracan Spyder. The Huracan has gotten a lot of praise thus far, and I know for my own taste, that losing the roof will only make it better.

So if anyone out there is in the market for a slightly used soul, I’m willing to entertain any offer over $400,000.

Alfa Romeo 4C Spotted on Woodward Ave in Michigan

We went out to eat right on Woodward Ave at Duggan’s Irish Pub, and this brand new Alfa Romeo 4C pulled in. This is the first 4C I’ve seen out in the wild, but it was unsurprising in Birmingham, MI with an Alfa dealer right up the street.

The Alfa Romeo 4C is basically a miniature Italian exotic, with a mid-mounted turbocharged 1.7L four cylinder engine on tap. That may not sound impressive, but 237hp grants plenty of performance in a car that weighs just 2400lbs. It’s also quite fuel efficient for a high performance car, capable of an EPA-rated 34 MPG on the highway.

The 4C’s one big drawback is that it only comes with a dual-clutch paddle shift gearbox. For me, not having a manual takes a lot away from the experience of a lightweight sports car, and it could be a deal-breaker if I’m ever in the market. That said, I have hear the dual-clutch trans works pretty well, so it’s at least worth a test drive.

Although it isn’t perfect, we should all be very glad the Alfa Romeo 4C exists. It is the car that is bringing the Alfa name back to the US, soon to be followed by the new RWD Giulia sedan. The 4C is quite a pleasant sight in person, too, with a lot of design inspiration coming from the legendary Alfa Tipo 33 Stradale.

Lamborghini Diablo GT at the Concours of America

For Lamborghini buyers wanting a racing car experience on the road, the Diablo GT is the daddy of all Diablo models. Changed and upgraded in almost all ways pertaining to performance, the Diablo GT was basically a road-going version of Lamborghini’s Diablo GTR.

Of note, its V12 engine was enlarged to 6.0L from 5.7L, and power increased to 575hp from 530hp. The Diablo GT is rear-wheel-drive to save weight, and features a stripped-down interior. Power reaches the wheels via the same 5 speed manual transmission found in other Diablos, but buyers had the option to customize their gear ratios.

Lamborghini only built 80 Diablo GTs, making this a very sought-after car. The car was never actually sold here in America, so it made seeing this one at the Concours d’Elegance of America very special – this is the first Lamborghini Diablo GT I’ve ever laid eyes on.

What I really like about the Diablo GT is that it was a Lamborghini racing car for the road in the era when that still meant something serious. Today Lamborghini makes similar such models, SVs and Superleggerras, but they’re really more marketing gimmicks than actual racing cars that demand sacrifices from their driver. All it really means today is that there is carbon fiber on the door, instead of leather, and that some of the excessively artificial understeer has been dialed out of the handling. Oh, and if you want to row your own gears, you can forget it, paddle-shift is the only option.

I don’t want to knock the current Lambos too much here, though, because they are incredible machines. But incidentally, a Diablo GT was recently sold for $475,000, right around the same ~$500,000 that a new Aventador SV will set you back. So with that in mind, and a half-million dollar hole burning through your pocket, which extreme Lambo would you spend the money on?

I’d go for the Diablo GT over the Aventador SV without question. Maybe its because of the clutch pedal, or maybe its because only 80 Diablo GTs will ever exist to the Aventador SV’s 600 units. But really, I just find the Diablo GT to be more bad ass because it’s a purer driver’s car with less reliance on fancy technology.

This is our highlight gallery from Day 2 of the 2015 New Hope Auto Show last weekend. Sunday is always about supercars and other european cars, and this year was WAY better than last year.

Everything from a Renntech Mercedes SLR McLaren, to a Lexus LFA, to a Porsche 959 were present, along with the most minty Lamborghini Diablo SV I’ve ever seen.

The Lancia Stratos was the most epic of rally cars, basically an Italian supercar meant to race on dirt and road. We saw this striking orange Stratos at the Concours of America at St. John’s, and it stole everyone’s attention when it was driving around the show field.

The Car, as an Economic Indicator, Spells Trouble

Last year at Pebble Beach we saw a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO sell at auction for a record $38 Million. People “ooooed” and “aaaahhhed” at the sale price, but many were also underwhelmed because another 250 GTO had sold privately for $50 Million, and they had wanted to see a new world record.

From a larger economic perspective, this is madness in a most ludicrous form.

Now, I want to begin by stating that I am not someone who is against wealthy people, or against buying cool and expensive things. I am is someone with a degree in both economics and sociology who wants to see capitalism thrive in an an optimal state, where opportunity is abundant and competition is fierce.

True capitalism is an endangered species right now in America, and indeed the rest of the industrialized world. The danger is not communism/socialism, but the opposite, oligarchy. Too much of the total wealth lies in the hands of too few members of society, and the economy is being strangled more and more. In short it is because our entire economy is based around consumerism (buying and selling goods and services), and most people have less and less money to spend.

In the US, 90% of the total wealth is held by the top 10% of the population. That means 270 million Americans have very little money, and around 30 million Americans have a lot of money. The majority of consumers can’t spend much money, and the economy is suffocating because of it.

The $38 million Ferrari GTO is a big sign that our economy is in some serious trouble, let alone the $50 million Ferrari GTO that sold privately.
