Our Highlights From the 2015 Greenwich Concours Day 1

Greenwich Ferrari 330 P3-4 Jim Glickenhaus

The Greenwich Concours was nothing short of epic this year. There were insane cars in attendance of all types, and it was thoroughly entertaining to cover. This year there were a few European exotics mixed in with the American cars on Day 1. I’m not sure why, but it made a nice spectacle.

Of note, Jim Glickenhaus brought out his one of a kind Ferrari 330 P3/4 (above), two Pagani Huayras showed up, and the Packard 8 that won Day 1 was just immaculate.

Enjoy the gallery of Day 1, and be sure to check back for our highlights from Day 2 later on this week!

Mercedes AMG GT-S Spotted in Greenwich, CT

Mercedes AMG GT-S Greenwich CT

We’ve just returned from an exciting and car-tastic weekend at the Greenwhich Concours d’Elegance. We have tons of great material to bring you in the coming weeks, but take this as a small teaser.

We were perusing the parking lot, which is always interesting, and this brand new Mercedes AMG GT-S pops out of nowhere. This is the first AMG GT-S I’ve seen out in public, and we actually got to check one out in the show as well. I think it is a great looking car with the right sort of package to take on the Porsche 911s in its price range: 4.0L twin turbo V8, “503” German horsepower, and around 3500lbs with great weight distribution. Looks promising.

Much more to come from Greenwich!

Ferrari 275 NART Spyder at the 2015 Boca Raton Concours

Ferrari 275 GTB:4 NART Spyder Front Top Up

When only ten of a certain car are built, and 25 were to be made, the phrase “rarefied air” takes on another meaning. Back in 2013, Nick and I were fortunate enough to be within striking distance of two Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spyders, one that went across the auction block at $27.5 million, and another that stole the crowds at Pebble Beach just a few miles from the auction house. This silver one was at Pebble, but I was so busy staring at Testarossas that I managed to miss it.

Luckily, the “elusive” silver NART showed up at Boca this year, and I was fortunate enough to have seen it with my own sore eyes. I saw it from a distance and was unable to stay away from it for most of the afternoon. Although I’ve seen three of the ten produced already in less than two years, I cannot predict when I’ll see the other seven–although I’d love to be one to say that I have seen all of them. Enjoy the photos. Continue reading Ferrari 275 NART Spyder at the 2015 Boca Raton Concours

Why Is Paddle Shift Killing the Manual Transmission, and is it a good thing?

Paddle Shift vs Manual 2015

I am someone who has publicly lamented the decline of the manual transmission. But I’m also someone who has enjoyed the merits of modern paddle shift gearboxes in many different cars.

I find myself very much split on this issue.  So lets take a look at the various reasons why shifter paddles are replacing a gear lever and a third pedal in some of our favorite cars, and consider if it really is a good thing or not.

Note: To clear this up right away, by “paddle shift” I mean cars with automated manual gearboxes, either dual-clutch or single-clutch. I am in no way talking about anything like a Toyota Camry with the “sport package”, which has paddle shifters as a marketing gimmick.

1. More versatile on the road. (Having your cake and eating it too)

If you had something like a Lamborghini Diablo back in the mid 1990s chances are you had a lot of fun out on the open road. However, when you got into town and hit traffic, the heavy clutch made driving the car more of a $250,000 chore than an enjoyable way to spend a weekend afternoon. Considering the average speed of traffic on most roads is around 25-30mph, you’d be spending far more time putting along slowly than stretching the car’s legs. It’s a wonder why most owners hardly ever drove their exotic cars.

Today, Lamborghini only offers their cars with a paddle shift transmission. The sales numbers spoke for themselves. Once paddle shift was offered back around 2004, demand for manual Lambos simply fell off.

Paddle shift basically solved all the issues described above with the Diablo. Now, in an Aventador, you can rip your way into town and then just put the car in automatic mode when you hit traffic. You have a car that is a ferocious supercar when you want one, but is also just as easy to drive as a Toyota Camry when you don’t. You are no longer writing a six-figure check to put yourself through misery. And I agree, that is a major plus, especially in cars that had very difficult manual gearboxes like most supercars did.

Favorites from Vipers and Exotics for Victoria in Edison, NJ

Dodge Viper Whiparound Shot

My weekend of car shows in Middlesex County, NJ did not stop with the Elks Lodge show. I had been invited to attend the Vipers and Exotics for Victoria show at the local Quaker Steak and Lube down in Edison, NJ by my friend Schen–who was helping to run the event. Schen’s a huge Viper and Mopar fan and I was more than happy to attend and take some pictures. This was a charity event for the daughter of the restaurant’s regional manager, who has a brain disease that needs immediate treatment. All of the entry fees at the show went towards treatment for Victoria.

The people who I met on Sunday were incredible–the show was run tightly and felt very organized. A great contingency of Mopar faithful showed up in late-model Chargers and Challengers, while the Viper club sent along a few people too. Two particularly loud representatives of muscle past and present showed up too–a Shelby Cobra continuation car turned up, shortly after a McLaren-Mercedes SLR roared into the parking lot and set of every car alarm on the way out. All in all, it was a very enjoyable Sunday morning. Enjoy the photos. Continue reading Favorites from Vipers and Exotics for Victoria in Edison, NJ

Hypercar History (1950s-1980s)

Early Hypercar History

What is a hypercar? A hypercar is a supercar among supercars.

What is a supercar? A supercar is a faster, more extreme sports car.

What is a sports car? A sports car is a driving-focused machine in purpose with transportation being a secondary concern.

That is a very simplified rundown of the status that hypercars have in the world of automobiles. Supercars are what most people dream about, hypercars are what supercar owners dream about. They are the automobile fully turned up to eleven!

But where did it all begin, and how has this ultimate class of cars developed over time? Let’s go back to the 1950s.

Camo Lambo Aventador Spotted in New Hope, PA

Lamborghini Aventador New Hope PA

Spotted this insane camo-wrapped Lamborghini Aventador outside the New Hope Auto Show. Funny thing is they denied him entry to the show, even though there were plenty of spots available on the field. Luckily, I didn’t miss it!

R34 Nissan Skyline GTR vs R35 Nissan GTR: A JDM Pipe Dream!

[youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Lc3GJ2O5ic%5D

Car Throttle pits the Nissan R34 Skyline GTR against the modern Nissan R35 GTR. Sure, the R35 GTR is a lot faster, but in every plane of existence encompassed within our infinite multiverse, I’d rather have the R34 Skyline GTR. It’s just got more overall appeal in my opinion. See what you think.

Jaguar F-Type R Coupe Review: The Best Luxury Sports Car under $120 grand?

Jaguar F-Type R Coupe Review 1

The Porsche 911 has traditionally been the king of luxury sports cars, but the current generation has become way too expensive and is fairly forgettable. 911 Carrera S models start at $100,000 and can top $150,000 with all the options you want. For that kind of money, don’t you want something with a little more impact?

The 911 is probably as weak as it has ever been right now, and happily, there are many great options that can be had for under $120,000, let alone under $150,000.

The Jaguar F-Type is a relative newcomer, and it has a hell of a lot to offer for very reasonable money.

This is the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, a rear wheel drive one, which sadly will only exist for the 2015 model year. Come 2016, and all V8 F-Types will all be all wheel drive. The plus, longer tire life and more grip… the minus, longer tire life and more grip.

In either RWD or AWD form, though, the V8 Jag F-Type is a hugely desirable car. To the extent that I might argue it’s the best luxury sports car (or “Sports Grand Tourer”) to buy right now, overall.

Awesome Burnouts and Accelerations at the CF Charities Supercar Show!

Here is some fun stuff from the CF Charities Supercar Show last year. Naturally, when you hold a car meet on an open airstrip, some shenanigans are going to take place… in fact, the more, the better!

It was a motley crew of cars at the show, everything from everyday tuner cars to a mighty Bugatti Veyron and a straight-piped Porsche Carrera GT.

If you love hearing some engines being thrashed, and you love some tire smoke, then you’ll be glad you gave this video a watch!

Driving a Ferrari Testarossa to the Sahara Desert. Why Not?

Harry Metcalfe decides to take his Ferrari Testarossa on a grand tour to the Sahara Desert, because Nice and St. Tropez are so played out at this point. And evidently, the fuel is obscenely cheap in Morocco, so driving a 12 cylinder Ferrari is almost economical.

How does a Ferrari do in the Desert? Sit back, and find out…

The BMW i8 is Proof of Progress, and I Love It!

BMW i8 Amelia Island 1I saw my first BMW i8 out in the wild the other day, but only for just long enough to be awestruck, and then it was gone. While I didn’t manage to get a photo of that silver one on the road, I do have the photos from the i8’s first viewing at Amelia Island last year.

I must admit that I have love for everything that the BMW i8 represents, and I don’t think BMW could have executed this plug-in hybrid sports car any better. I remember in Monterey this year, we saw one parked in front of a restaurant, right next to a green McLaren P1. Which car drew the crowd?… The i8.

In fact, the most memorable part of that night was when I spent 10 minutes trying to convince a group of people that the i8 wasn’t a concept car, but was, in fact, on sale. They kept saying BMW would never make a car that looked so radical and actually expect to sell them. I had to pull out my phone and show them the i8 on BMW’s website, complete with its $136,000 base price. At that point, they finally believed me, and were wowed.

The BMW i8 is in the same price range as the higher-end Porsche 911 Carrera models, but BMW has given it the head-turning exotic appeal of a Pagani or a McLaren P1. The i8 looks like nothing else on the road. It even has show-y gullwing doors so you can make a grandiose entrance, or so you can’t get back into your car if people park on either side of you. Yes, that wonderful supercar idiocy is present and accounted for in the i8.

Performance wise, the i8 isn’t really a supercar by modern standards, but it’s plenty fast to have a lot of fun with. 0-60 takes 3.8 seconds, the 1/4 mile goes in 12.4 sec, and it tops out at 155mph. The kicker is the fuel economy. Where a Porsche 911 Carrera S can manage a respectable 29mpg, Motor Trend saw an Average of 45mpg in the BMW i8.

Put in 2004 terms, the i8 has the performance of a Ferrari 360 with the fuel economy of a Toyota Prius. This is progress people.

Enjoy the pics!
