Lancia 037 at a rainy Greenwich Concours

Lancia 037 Greenwich Concours 1

It absolutely poured for much of the second day at this year’s Greenwich Concours, but the show field was still pretty decent. As the skies were leaking, we passed the time stuffing our faces with delicious and complementary lobster sandwiches, while also taking royal advantage of the wine tasting tent.

When the rain let up we we were able to get our photos of the cars dripping wet. This Lancia 037 is the homologated road version of the legendary Lancia rally car, and it immediately caught our eye when we first walked into the show.

Enjoy the gallery of this trail-rated Italian Stallion!

1955 Ferrari 375 Plus Cabriolet at the 2016 Elegance at Hershey

Ferrari 375 Plus Cabriolet Front 1

Ferrari ownership and postwar royalty seem to go hand-in-hand, especially one offs. This 1955 375 Plus Cabriolet is a one-off specialty car built for the ex-King Leopold III of Belgium, and is a mix of the older engineering that put Ferrari on the map in the early Fifties and newer styling features that would later become staples of the 250 and 275 lines throughout the late Fifties and into the mid Sixties. Ferrari F40 at Bonhams, Greenwich

Ferrari F40 Greenwich Bonhams

As far as I’m concerned, whoever is selling a LaFerrari or an Enzo can keep it. If I’m going to spend that kind of money on one of the super Ferraris, it’s going to be an F40. It was the ultimate Ferrari experience in its day, and it has managed to hold onto that designation in modern times.

We were pleased to catch this F40 at Bonhams auction at the Greenwich Concours. It’s always nice when you’re able to catch a tangible glimpse of such a wild dream.

We had a fun, but rainy, weekend at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, especially on Sunday. Saturday was quite nice, though, and there was a spectacular array of cars on the field. This is our highlight gallery from Day 1.

Lamborghini PoloStorico and This Brand New (Again) 1971 Miura SV

Lamborghini Miura SV PoloStorico Restoration 7

This is a 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV. In fact, it is the first Miura SV, the one shown at the model’s debut at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. You sure wouldn’t know it was over 40 years old, though, because it looks like it rolled off the production line a few hours ago.

This iconic Miura is the first restorative masterpiece of Lamborghini’s new factory restoration program, PoloStorico. While down at Amelia Island this year, Lamborghini was kind enough to send us an invite to their unveiling event. There, among some wonderful complimentary glasses of wine, we got to see the work of PoloStorico up close, as well as the massive grin on the owner’s face when the cover came off.

What’s really striking about this green Miura is just how perfect all of it’s minute details are. There are many nicely kept Miuras out there, but this thing was absolutely flawless. I mean, Lamborghini even re-did the paint job in the absolute period-correct way.

Calling this a restoration is almost a disservice because it’s really more a Miura reborn, nurtured to perfection again by its own mother. I’m quite sure Ferruccio is proud, wherever he is.

Enjoy the photos!

Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours

Cal Spyder SWB Front

In the Fifties, Ferrari began to become a household name. By the time the 250 launched, they were known on the track, and they were becoming better-known for producing exotic, alluring sports cars with an Italian flair and twelve free-breathing cylinders underneath the hood. The 250 series, of course, is a timeless classic at this point and now it’s an all-time great. Continue reading Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours

Ferrari 288 GTO at RM Sotheby’s Auction, Amelia Island

Ferrari 288 GTO RM Sotheby's Amelia Island 1

That time Ferrari took their 308 super sports car, and strapped two turbos to it because they wanted to go rally racing. They never actually went rally racing, but they did help lay the foundations for the royal epic-ness that is the modern hypercar.

The idea of taking a supercar and making it more “super” was in many ways born with the Ferrari 288 GTO. It is the first in the lineup of, currently five, super Ferraris, the F40, F50, Enzo and LaFerrari in addition.  They’re all fine and great, and the F40 in many ways gets most of the lime light, but the 288 GTO is genesis, and it will always be tremendously special.

Just how special? Well, early this March it was about $2,585,000 worth of special.

Not bad, eh?

1991 Lamborghini Diablo at the Amelia Island Festivals of Speed

1991 Lamborghini Diablo Front Angle

For a brief moment in time, the Lamborghini Diablo was on top of its world.  With a top speed of 202 MPH, this was, for a short period of time, the fastest production car money could buy.  It was also the replacement for the radical, groundbreaking Countach, which had been in production since the cocaine-addled 1970s. This would also be the last Lambo built before the company was taken over by Volkswagen AG, so it’s a completely ridiculous, insane, fire breathing supercar with plenty of risk of breaking down at any time. Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Review: A Recipe Perfected

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Review 4

There is absolutely no substitute for seat time when judging a car. I thought Alfa Romeo had sold themselves out when they built the 4C without the option of a manual gearbox. I mean, who on earth would want a light little sports car without a clutch pedal and a gear lever? But the truth is, building a good car is a lot like cooking a good meal. Each ingredient must be executed well in its own right, but then the most important thing is how it all comes together as a whole.

The Italians are known for treating their cars exactly as they treat their food, as works of art. Alfa Romeos, in particular, have always had a sense of living soul, even if, at times, there wasn’t much else good about them. My friend, Evan, had an old Alfa Spider that only ever worked properly when he was taking a girl out on a date in it – now, isn’t that the most Italian thing you’ve ever heard?

Alfa Romeos are cars built on an ideology of passion and emotion first, and everything else second. Sure, in the past that has sometimes meant questionable dependability, but at least they never committed the atrocity of making life boring or mundane. Life is worth more than just living, it’s worth enjoying, and that is what Alfa Romeos are all about.

This white 4C Spider is actually the first Alfa Romeo I’ve ever driven. It marks the return of Alfa Romeo production cars to the USA, and will be soon followed by the new Giulia sedan. Being my first Alfa, I admit that I had underestimated the way they can make the ingredients of a car come together into one delicious masterpiece of a machine.

I quickly realized that the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider has something very special about it. I drove 8 very cool cars in the same weekend, including a Ferrari and some Porsches, but this Alfa 4C was the one I just couldn’t stop thinking about. Here’s why…

Lamborghini LM002 Spotted at the Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island

Lamborghini LM002 Amelia Island 3

Lamborghini once made an SUV/Truck for the Italian military. This is the street version, the Lamborghini LM002. Think of it as a Humvee with more style, fine Italian leather, a manual gearbox, and the V12 from the Lamborghini Countach supercar. Yes, this is a V12 Lamborghini off-roader, and it’s badass as hell.

We caught this very rare green LM002 outside the Ritz Carlton, host to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. We were in a hurry to get to an event, so I only shot it as we walked past, but it was unbelievably cool.

Dads, keep your daughters away from any guy who pulls up in one of these…
