1969 Lamborghini Miura P400S at the Elegance at Hershey, 2015

Lamborghini Miura P400S Front 1

Miuras are gorgeous cars. When it launched, nothing else on the road could possibly hope to catch it on a top-speed run. This was a car capable of over 180MPH in 1968, which no other car came close to at the time. This 1969 model was here in all its Bertone-bodied glory at Hershey last month. Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona at Hopewell Cruise Night

Ferrari 365 Daytona Hopewell

This striking yellow Ferrari Daytona is somewhat of a regular at shows in Hopewell, and it’s a real driver. The owner is always very nice to everyone, and he actually still uses this magnificent Ferrari grand tourer the way it was meant to be used.

It’s always fantastic to see a stallion like this that actually gets to stretch its legs!

BMW 507 at The Elegance at Hershey

Hershey Elegance BMW 507

This 1957 BMW 507 roadster stood out starkly for me at The Elegance at Hershey this year. I always love seeing BMW 507s, but this one, glistening in luscious red paint, took hold of my attention and would not let go.

With just 253 examples built, the BMW 507 was a product of 1950s, post-war Germany, commissioned by US importer Max Hoffman along side the likes of the Mercedes 300SL and Porsche 356. The 507 was a new league of sports car for BMW, and helped to really set the foundation for the exotic automobiles we love today. The 507 cost an outrageous $9,000-$11,000 brand new back in the mid-late ’50s, making it quite similar to modern supercars today in adjusted cost.

The BMW 507 packed a 3.2L V8 under its hood with around 150hp. Not much over a Miata today, but back then its performance was very solid, and it could reach 124 mph (200kph) flat-out.

Today the BMW 507 is a rare collectable piece that demands a huge amount of money. Values today easily top $1,000,000, and a perfect one will fetch over $2,000,000.

Enjoy the photos of this stunner!

Autocross and a random car show? Sounds like Sunday.

Neon 3 Wheelin

Sunday was a long day for me, the 1993 Miata, and my sunburned skin. When it’s 90 degrees outside, the first thing into my mind is to run back inside and cower underneath my air conditioner, unless I’m at the beach. There is no air conditioning in the Miata anymore, and at this NASA/MSNE autocross event up at MetLife Stadium (home of the Jets and the Giants, and probably Jimmy Hoffa), it was hot enough to fry eggs on the street and fry my nose and forehead to a nice, golden brown (red). Shane turned up too, in his silver Miata which makes my car look concours-fresh. Continue reading Autocross and a random car show? Sounds like Sunday.

1948 Daimler “Green Goddess” DE36–Best of Show at Hershey, 2015

Daimler Green Goddess Front 2

When it comes to large cars, everyone thinks that good old America is the king. Well, they usually are, until someone else finds a way to top them. Luckily, it doesn’t happen that often. Not so luckily, it’s usually something absolutely mind-stomping when it does. Say hello to this award-winning, Machiavellian, Super-Sized Daimler DE-36 drophead coupe, which won best of show at Hershey last month. Nick saw this at Pebble Beach when he was a teenager and immediately made mention of its show-winning cred on the West Coast. Competition-Prepped 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster at the 2015 Greenwich Concours

1957 Porsche 356A Speedster Front Left

The Porsche 356 is a timeless classic. Small, lithe, and captivating, this was the first of Porsche’s sports cars to hit the market and it lasted until 1965 when it was replaced by the 911. It may have been saddled with a four-cylinder engine derived from Volkswagen, and it may have somewhat resembled a VW Beetle, but it was far from a VW Beetle in any way. The Speedster is the most desirable, and this 1957 was the second to last year of production for the lightweight, dry-weather model so loved by contemporary racers, and today’s collectors. ’69 Chevrolet Camaro SS 396 Convertible at the Greenwich Concours

Chevrolet Camaro SS 396 Greenwich 1

When I daydream about my ideal classic Muscle Car, this ’69 Chevy Camaro is pretty much what I imagine. Something that embodies the essence of the flavor that made the American Muscle Car famous, but also with the right package to be an enjoyable driver.

This 1969 model Chevrolet Camaro SS 396 Convertible has everything I’d want. It’s not the craziest Camaro, but it’s not the little one either. She’s got a 396 big block under the hood, with an enjoyable 350-375hp. Not too “fast” by today’s standards, but surely enough to smoke the tires and piss off some Prius owners. For me, this sort of car isn’t about speed at this point, though. It’s about cruisin’ around and enjoying life. That’s why I was thrilled to see it had a manual tranny, a proper 4 on the floor. I know many people like automatic Muscle Cars, but I’d never have one without a stick.

So with this Camaro I could enjoy the full muscle car experience. It has the unique style, a nice big-block V8 rumble, enough performance to get in trouble, some wind-in-your-hair excitement, and an enjoyable manual transmission. There are literally no drawbacks as far as I’m concerned.

That daydream is why this Camaro caught my eye at the Greenwich Concours, because one day I hope to have a classic Muscle car just like this. It may be a Camaro, or it may be something else, but this one had everything I’d want, and at the show the dream was real enough to touch.

One day, but till then enjoy the photos!

Highlights From Hershey Part 1

Hershey Elegance Daimler

We visited The Elegance At Hershey this past weekend out in Hershey, PA. There were many beautiful cars in attendance, but the swoopy 1948 Daimler you see above won Best in Show. This was my second time seeing that particular car. It won Best in Show a few years back in Detroit, and it stunned me just as hard this time around.

This is the first Gallery of highlights from the show, with much more to come.

Enjoy!

The Stunning Alfa Romeo Display at NYIAS 2015

Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale NYIAS 1

The Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale is one of the cars I’d seriously consider selling my soul for, but I had never laid eyes on one in the flesh until the New York Auto Show this year. It was a massive surprise for me, as I had not heard it would be present, and I literally flipped a shit when we came across it.

Our friend, Nathan Corry, shot this same Tipo 33 Stradale at Amelia Island this year, and he let us use his photos from the event. I was beyond thrilled to be able to see the car for myself in NY, though, as you might imagine. It is a truly magnificent machine.

Also present was a Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo 8C Monza as well as one of the handful of Alfa TZ2’s built. Along with the 33 Stradale, the Alfa Romeo stand, with just these cars, was probably worth as much, or more, money than all of the rest of the cars at NYIAS combined. Think about that.

Even so, this is the sort of stuff only true car nerds would appreciate, so there were very few people stopping to see these incredible cars. I found it funny because hundreds of people would walk past, and then every so often you’d see someone just loose their mind with excitement over the cars (as I did).

Alfas don’t get much better than these, so enjoy the pics!

1957 Mini Moke at the 2015 Boca Raton Concours

Mini Moke Front

Anybody want to go fishing? Well, I’m no fisherman, but I think that with this thing, it’s be difficult to justify parking it near a dock–the metal’s so thin it might just rust within a foot of the ocean. This is a 1957 Mini Moke, but it’s not just any Moke–this one’s a beach car. When it comes to beach cars, I’m used to seeing Fiat 600s with basket-weave seats and doily trim hanging off the cloth roof. This is only the second Moke I’ve seen made into a beach car (the other one was at an auction near the Quail in August of last year). Continue reading 1957 Mini Moke at the 2015 Boca Raton Concours
