It’s late July. You’ve just gotten back from the latest business meeting, and the Mets traded for Cespedes today. You’ve got five hundred bucks burning a hole in your pocket, and a friend says, Odds are 100-1 on the Mets being in first place within a week of the trade. And because you won the bet, you’ve got $500,000 to spend on some cars. But, since you work full time, you’d better buy one car for each day of your work week. Until last month, I’d never been to Detroit. Nick kept telling me as we got closer and closer to the Motor City that the cruise-in scene on weekend nights was absolutely my sort of thing, and I was stoked. Of course, Mother Nature had other ideas. After Nick, Shane, and I got drenched in a freak thunderstorm that gave us the best rainbow I’d seen in a decade, I looked around at the cars that did manage to show up–and I wasn’t disappointed. Edmunds Compares the C2 Corvette and C7 Corvette

Edmunds takes us for a spin in two Corvettes separated by 50 years, a C2 Stingray and the current C7 Stingray.

My how things have progressed technologically, but I still think the C2 Stingray is the best looking Vette of all time.

Carlos Lago puts the new Miata against the BRZ. What will win?

The BRZ and the new Miata are similar in that they are both bona-fide sports cars for less than the cost of a well-optioned Toyota Camry. They’re also both blessed with four cylinders, rear-wheel-drive, and a sporting chassis with good build quality. Carlos Lago takes both of them to the streets in this episode of Head 2 Head. Notable as well is that this was Carlos’s last film work with Motor Trend–he’s outdone himself. Then, he hands the narration off to Randy Pobst. Take 25 minutes on your lunch break, and watch this–but listen to what both have to say. I’m revealing nothing. I still want to drive both back-to-back myself, but this taught me a lot of what the ND has to offer against the BRZ.

When I say Kammback, the Pontiac Firebird is not a car anyone thinks of. People will think of it if I say phrases like “Screaming Chicken”, “Mullet”, “Eighties”, and my personal favorite, “Drunk Teenager Crashed It Into a Telephone Pole”. Well, this one lacks the drunken teenager and the Screaming Chicken, but it makes up for it with much added Kammback style. Miuras are gorgeous cars. When it launched, nothing else on the road could possibly hope to catch it on a top-speed run. This was a car capable of over 180MPH in 1968, which no other car came close to at the time. This 1969 model was here in all its Bertone-bodied glory at Hershey last month. Jalopnik Finds Out If The Jeep Renegade Can “Jeep” Properly

Jalopnik takes the Jeep Renegade Trail Hawk off-road to see how it stacks up as a real Jeep.

Sunday was a long day for me, the 1993 Miata, and my sunburned skin. When it’s 90 degrees outside, the first thing into my mind is to run back inside and cower underneath my air conditioner, unless I’m at the beach. There is no air conditioning in the Miata anymore, and at this NASA/MSNE autocross event up at MetLife Stadium (home of the Jets and the Giants, and probably Jimmy Hoffa), it was hot enough to fry eggs on the street and fry my nose and forehead to a nice, golden brown (red). The Porsche 356 is a timeless classic. Small, lithe, and captivating, this was the first of Porsche’s sports cars to hit the market and it lasted until 1965 when it was replaced by the 911. It may have been saddled with a four-cylinder engine derived from Volkswagen, and it may have somewhat resembled a VW Beetle, but it was far from a VW Beetle in any way. The Speedster is the most desirable, and this 1957 was the second to last year of production for the lightweight, dry-weather model so loved by contemporary racers, and today’s collectors. Roadkill revives my favorite project car…then gives it to Pobst.

Randy Pobst should be given a Nobel Prize for the size of his stones. Nick and I both love Roadkill, the show from Motor Trend that features Hot Rod Magazine editors David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan doing nutball stuff with old cars, then subjecting them to either abuse or some sort of scatterbrained idea.  The Draguar, originally a Jaguar XJ12, packed a swapped small-block Chevy with a Weiand 671 blower (which self destructed at the drag strip), and now has a blueprinted V8 with over 600hp–they got it running again, washed it, and gave it to Randy Pobst.  Watch the rest to see what else happens–I was laughing so hard I really did fall off my chair, and I have the bruise on my arm to prove it.
