Spyker C8 Spyder Panels Open

Sometimes, winter Cars and Coffee do happen. And just when I was about to leave and get some fried chicken, a Spyker suddenly stands in between me and a fried chicken food coma. Of course, when it’s a blue C8 Spyder like this one, the chicken’s going to lose, and it’s going to lose big. The craftsmanship on these cars is pure artwork from start to finish, with exposed linkages, quilted leather, and impeccable paintwork. It’s truly a treat to see one of these in the flesh and I was not expecting it. But of course, I welcome a Spyker with open arms, just as I would welcome a new pet into the family. Porsche 991.2 GT2 RS at the Philadelphia Auto Show

The current “King of the Ring,” the new Porsche 991.2 GT2 RS is an incredible machine to behold up close. It’s so focused on speed that it’s damn near a racecar, but being a road car, all of its functional fine details have to be well-finished. All of the air vents are finished with beautiful carbon fiber and the single piece center-lock wheels are quite elegant in addition to being functionally lightweight. As an object, the GT2 RS is something very special.

I also took a look under the rear bumper at the exhaust system, and DAMN! It’s a valved Porsche Sport Exhaust like the optional system on lesser 911s, but in the GT2 RS the butterfly valve is basically just a straight dump hole out the rear of the catalyst assembly. That means the exhaust sound will be about as rowdy as can be when the valve is open, and it will only get channeled through the muffler when the valve is closed. In short, your neighbors may hate you.

But everyone at Cars and Coffee will love you, so I guess it evens out. It was a thrill to see this thing in person for the first time. Enjoy the gallery!

Ah, the legendary Alfa Romeo Tipo 33. It was a successful racing platform, and it birthed one of my most lusted-after road cars of all time, the Tipo 33 Stradale.

Get this though, this 1975 Tipo 33 racecar is powered by a 3 liter flat 12 that makes a massive 500hp at 11,000 RPM. I wonder how that sounds…

The New Bullitt Mustang at the Philly Auto Show

Ford Mustang Bullitt S550 Philly

Bullitt Mustangs are badass tributes to a fairly boring Steve McQueen movie that happened to have an epic (and real) car chase. Special edition Bullitt have generally just been dark green versions of a standard Mustang, but this new S550 does pack a little extra punch under the hood, to the tune of 475hp over the standard model’s 460hp. That’s only around 10% down from the mighty GT350.

It’s pretty impressive, and I must say I do love the look in dark green. Thumbs up!

Highlights From the Philly Auto Show

Bugattis in Philly

We visited the Philadelphia Auto Show this weekend and there were lot’s of sights to be seen. The exotics displays were as good as they’ve ever been, largely thanks to CF Charities and their friends. The hypercar game was strong, with two Bugattis and 3 very unique American offerings from SSC, Mosler and Saleen, among others. It was insane.

The rest of the show was top-notch too, with many of the latest and greatest offerings were on display. We also got to take a quick spin in the new KIA Stinger GT, and the car made a great first impression.

This spectacular 1934 Delage D8S Cabriolet is one of the most elegant French cars I’ve ever seen

This Delage is quite a work of automotive art. The fine details and the sheer craftsmanship of its build in addition to its seamlessly elegant design made it stand out at the Radnor Hunt Concours this year. The alligator leather and the chrome trim were incredible, but the crown jewel of its details was definitely its hood ornament, a crystal woman with a swept headdress.

1973 Triumph Stag at the 2017 Radnor Hunt Concours

Triumph’s TR series was excellent, until the bender hit rock bottom in 1980 with the cheese-wedge TR7. Luckily, one of their brightest spots outside of that series was the striking little Stag, released in 1970 and pulled from the lineup in 1978. They weren’t without their flaws, but the body style, looks, and driving dynamics were above par in the Seventies. Just don’t keep it too long, or you’d be seeing your mechanic more often than a home-cooked meal. While far from the best car money could buy, it was a fun car for the times and still had plenty of appeal. This particular brown example shone brightly at the Radnor Hunt Concours last fall.

Spyker C8 LaViolette Misslewood 7

Spykers are beautifully crafted machines, as much works of art as they are sports cars. There are so many fine details to take in, and they all add up to a striking whole that will make a Ferrari or Lamborghini seem so mass-market.

This Spyker C8 LaViolette was a centerpiece at the Misselwood Concours this year. People adored it, whether they knew what it was or not.

Auburn 12-165 Salon Speedster 3

This was the cheapest 12 cylinder American luxury car in 1933, one third the price of a comparable Packard. But 1933 was an era in the shock of the Great Depression, and those with money had become more hesitant to flaunt their wealth around with things like fancy cars. As a result, only 14 of these Auburns were produced that year.

The car you see here has been restored to its original black and burgundy color scheme. Enjoy the photos.
