Am I the only one who likes the idea of a Jeep Renegade-like Toyota FJ?

toyota-ft-4x_concept-2017-1280-04

This is the Toyota FT-4X Concept, and it’s a clear hint that Toyota may be developing a small FJ SUV to take on the funky Jeep Renegade. A lot of people are hating on it, but I’m digging the idea a lot. I, for one, like a lot of things about the Jeep Renegade, and I think Toyota has a real opportunity to take a lot of that market. All they have to do is make a dependable small off-roader with some funky FJ style, and they will eat Jeep’s lunch.

I hope the FT-4X does make it into production, donning the FJ name when it does.

Call me the island in a sea of haters.

Classic Toyota FJ40 Spotted at Amelia Island

That time Toyota made a better jeep than Jeep. These old FJs are highly sought after now, which means many people take the trouble to restore them to immaculate condition. We caught this green one at the Ritz on Amelia Island.

I really love the style of the old FJs, and between these, the Land Cruiser, and their trucks, Toyota has quite a history of making legendary off-roaders. I was a fan of the newer FJ Cruiser, from a few years back, too. Honestly, I think Toyota should make FJ into a sub-brand and take on Jeep head-on. Unfortunately, they seem too hell-bent on being bland to take such a bold step at this point.

When the condoms all broke, but #Stance is life, this Toyota Sienna is your Shaggin’ Wagon

Slammed Toyota Sienna 1

This is what will happen increasingly as the stance people reproduce. Minivans are usually seen as lame, but with a little trendy inspiration, this one has become pretty “bitchin.”

I gotta hand it to whoever built this Sienna, they did a great job with it. That is one good thing about the stance culture, you can participate with any car. That means, unlike us sports car enthusiasts, that when you have kids, you won’t be completely and utterly screwed.

Either way, I just hope they at least open the windows when they vape with the kids in the car.

Toyota RAV4 XLE 2WD Review: More Ground Clearance With Less Compromise

Toyota RAV4 Review 5

Last weekend my girlfriend, Gabrielle, and I travelled deep into the lake country of Minnesota for a family gathering of sorts. I don’t get up there as often as I’d like to, and I always feel like the visit is too short when I do. This trip was different in a few ways, though. My Grandma Ann’s health had been declining, to the point where I knew we needed to get out to try and see her. I wanted her, and the rest of the family, to meet Gab, and I knew time was becoming a factor. Unfortunately, as it happened, our visit came a few weeks too late.

Our trip to Minnesota became about finding solace as as a family, and showing support for my Grandpa Don in this most trying time in life. On the lighter side, Gab got to meet everyone, many of whom had been anxiously waiting to see if she was real for some time. We really had a great time, and it was beautiful just being together with everyone as a family. It was a short trip, but it was extremely valuable.

Now, me being me, I don’t like to rent a car without doing an article on it. Gab likes crossovers and she loves bright blue, so this particular Toyota RAV4 seemed to check all of the right boxes in the car park. It’s not the sort of car I usually review either, so I figured it might add some relevancy for this site in areas other than expensive sports cars.

A few years back, my parents and I had a RAV4 in Sedona, Arizona, and we were thrilled with how well it did with some rather intense surprise off-roading. That one was 4WD, though, and this one was 2WD, so I guess it’s more of a “RAV2”. Even still, rural Minnesota has some off road areas, so I figured the ground clearance may come in handy, along with that legendary Toyota dependability.

1990 Toyota Century at the 2016 Festivals of Speed, Amelia Island

Toyota Century Front Doors Closed

At Amelia, there’s quite a lot going on and if you blink, you will miss a lot. The show over at one of the other large hotels, the Festivals of Speed, was in full swing on Saturday afternoon in the ultra-strong Florida sun, and I discovered a few cars at the show which I’m unlikely to ever see again. One of them was a 6×6 Mercedes-Benz, which I will cover at a later date. This car, however, is one that almost no one has ever heard of, unless they’ve lived in Japan and had some obscenely wealthy friends (or friends in the Yakuza). Meet the Toyota Century–or the Japanese equivalent of a Maybach, from the Eighties. Continue reading 1990 Toyota Century at the 2016 Festivals of Speed, Amelia Island

Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, and Toyota GT86 FA20 Tuning and Modification Guide

Stanced Scion FRS First Class FitmentThe Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, and Toyota GT86 are all basically the same car underneath. A popular fun machine at an affordable price is an appealing thing, and they’ve sold pretty well.

Most car enthusiasts will wind up wanting to modify and upgrade their cars, tailoring its experience for their own personal tastes. There are many ways to go about modifying a Toyobaru 86 variant. This is my own take and advice on the best way to go about modifying the car intelligently and cost-effectively.

Feel free to agree or disagree in the comments…

Highlights from the 2016 Philadelphia Auto Show

Philly Auto Show 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

The Philadelphia Auto Show was lively this year, with many of the newest releases on display.

I must admit that I am completely in love with the blue Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio you see above (it’s stick too). I also got my first look at the new Fiata (124 Spider), Cadillac XT5, Honda Ridgeline, and the oh-so-sleek Volvo S90. I also got a good look at the new Toyota Prius, which was regrettable on the eyes.

There are a lot of great new cars to be excited about!

Enjoy the gallery.

Back to the Future Toyota Tacoma Custom at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show

Back to the Future Tacoma SR5 Front Right

Check out that 4×4!
Yup, you know what it is.  I know what it is.  For anyone who was a huge fan of Back to the Future, this car is a massive treat. Back in 1985, Marty returns to his present day after getting his parents back together, and returns to a wealthy family instead of his old lower-middle-class status. Much to his surprise, he opens the garage door and the very 1985 Toyota SR5 4×4 extended cab he sees at a gas station at the beginning of the movie is sitting right in front of him. Toyota used this car in October to help launch the new Mirai (which was also accounted for at L.A. this year), and made a total of 3 custom Tacomas to mark the day when Marty shows up in 2015. It certainly doesn’t fly–but Toyota nailed the modern execution of the old mini-truck. Continue reading Back to the Future Toyota Tacoma Custom at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show

Over Thanksgiving weekend this year, I finally got to cash in my birthday present from last year–my brother Matt agreed to take me to the Los Angeles Auto Show if I’d come visit him. I decided that it would be foolish to say no–after all, I’d been going to the New York Auto Show for a decade and a half, and I’d never seen the show in Los Angeles. Sorry, New York crew–but the LA Auto Show is indeed better. It’s cleaner, the city doesn’t smell like a New Jersey sewer, there’s real parking (and they charge only twenty bucks, whereas New York charges whatever they darn well please), and there’s even some ride-and-drives (which I did only two, but will definitely drive one of those two cars again soon). There were plenty of awesome Japanese performance cars at First Class Fitment 2015, including two Nissan Skylines and a few FD Mazda RX7s, among others. It was a nice slice of JDM heaven with a little extra stance sprinkled on top.

Enjoy our highlights from the Land of the Rising Sun!
