The Stunning Supercar Display at the Philly Auto Show

IMG_3165

Usually the FC Kerbeck display of Aston Martins and Lamborghinis is the high point of auto exotica at the Philly Auto Show, but this year was very different. A local collector decided to bring his personal collection of ultra rare, limited production supercars to display.

We’ve featured most of them before in our coverage of the owner’s CF Charities Supercar Show, but these cars are so rare that you don’t pass up a chance to shoot them. What I find most interesting, is that (other than the Ferrari) these are  all the ultimate versions of exotic American supercars from Saleen, Mosler, and SSC. There are many great car collections in the world, but this one his absolutely unique, namely because the Mosler is a one-off and the Saleen is 1 of 3.

I remember being a kid and just oogling at the supercars on display at the Philly Auto Show. I admit, seeing a standard Lamborghini doesn’t do what it once did for me at this point, but seeing these insane cars lined up together brought me back to that feeling.

Enjoy!

Ford better to not screw up the new Bronco…

2018-Ford-Bronco

The title may sound obvious, but the obvious has often proven difficult for the corporate mindsets in Detroit. Keep it simple, stupid, the people who want a new Ford Bronco want a Ford Bronco in the iconic sense. Give them the rugged functionality they need wrapped in the classic Bronco style they want, and you will sell units. This image has been making the rounds on the interweb, and people seem to really love it. Could the path forward for Ford be any clearer?

The new Bronco is supposedly going to take on the Jeep Wrangler, an off-road champ who’s style hasn’t changed since “retro” was brand new. People love that iconic style, and most won’t settle for a watered-down alternative from Ford. The new Bronco has to be the same sort of “special” that the original was. Anything but retro styling will be a huge mistake here.

I trust Ford to make the Bronco a decent functional off-roader at this point, but I’m worried the corporate big-wigs might try to water down the styling to try and make it appeal to everyone, and that’d be a dumb move. Let’s be honest here, most people who buy a Jeep Wrangler don’t do much serious off-roading, but they all love it’s distinctive style. In my opinion, the Bronco needs to compete with the Wrangler on style above all else. Whether or not it can climb a bigger rock or not is secondary for most people.

Tesla Take 2 with the Model S P90D

Tesla Model S P90D 16

I got my first taste of the Tesla magic in 2015 when I drove a Model S P85D. It made one hell of a first impression, and I was totally blown away. I felt like I had just experienced the true next step for the automobile, capable of blistering acceleration, superior practicality and sublime comfort, all in a single package. Oh, and did I mention it was green, too? I was enamored with it then, but I was curious to see how the Tesla would fair the second time around, now that my initial fascination had worn off.

I was recently able to take a spin in the new, facelifted, Model S P90D. This drive was much better than the first one. It lasted much longer, the roads were much better, and I got to try out some of Tesla’s amazing new features (including Autopilot). I also gained more perspective on the Model S, what it is, and what it is not.

Polaris Slingshot Review: You’ll Be the Talk of the Town

IMG_6306

Glued to the window. I mean this kid’s face must have literally become fused with the glass. There is something about the raw enthusiasm of a child that’s quite effective for judging certain things about a car. Let’s put it this way, we were stuck in traffic, surrounded by hundreds of other cars, but this kid’s attention was transfixed solely on mine, and for good reason. Just look at this thing, it’s the Polaris Slingshot, and it’s friggin’ awesome!

The kid would’ve never even bothered to notice if I were in any sort of normal car, whether it be a Toyota Camry, a BMW M5, or probably even a Porsche 911. There was something vastly entrancing to his young mind about my Polaris Slingshot, to the point where he was trying to push himself through the window to get a better look at it. You’d honestly need to be in a Lamborghini, or something that exotic, to draw the same kind of attention this outrageous reverse trike does.

I think, by all definitions, the Polaris Slingshot can be considered a genuine exotic car. It commands crazy amounts of attention, it’s exciting to drive, and it’s totally idiotic in most practical ways. What I found in my time driving the Slingshot, though, was just how exotic it really is in the most classic sense. You see, the exotic car experience consists of a grand mix of excitement and frustration. The great aspects are incredible, but they are balanced out by serious flaws, which are often infuriating, excruciating, or both at the same time.

The question is, are the Polaris Slingshot’s good aspects worth putting up with its bad aspects? Or, for that matter, is it even worth your time in a world full of other wonderful cars and bikes?

I’ve wanted to drive a Slingshot ever since I first saw one fly past me on the road, so I decided to rent one and find out during a recent vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC.

The Lincoln Mark VII LSC Chronicles, Part 2: June, July, and August -The Plot Thickens

Mark VII Front

This is Part 2 in a series.

Where we last left this story, I had taken a few interviews and the Lincoln had barfed coolant all over South Jersey. By the beginning of June, I’d parked the poor thing and taken back to driving the Legacy nearly full-time. I’d hit off on a few good interviews in the beginning of June, and while walking out to take the Lincoln to the center of town to pick up election results with my friend Damon, I got the offer as I started the engine. What started out as another day in the pack, had become a blessing. A blessing that turned into a curse, within due time. Chevy C2 Corvette Stingray 427 at Scarsdale

Corvette C2 427 Stingray Scarsdale

I still maintain, the C2 is still the best looking Corvette of all time. Something about those bold, creased lines.

Jay Leno Takes Us Out in a ’64 Pontiac GTO, the Genesis of the Muscle Car.

Putting a big engine in a smaller car is the basic recipe for “hot rodding.” Back in the 1960’s, GM corporate was just as much of a hard-headed pain in the ass as they are today. As a company policy, they didn’t allow their biggest engines to be put into their smaller cars. Thankfully, John DeLorean and his team took it upon themselves to write that wrong.

Chevy C7 Corvette Gran Sport vs. Porsche 991.2 Carrera S

Corvette vs Porsche 911, it’s been a rivalry for decades, even though the two price points often don’t overlap. This is all for bragging rights on the streets, and now the difference is bigger than ever. Can the new turbocharged 911 Carrera S beat out the new Corvette Gran Sport? And even if it can win, can the Porsche justify its $50,000 premium over the Vette?

Ever Wonder What a 520hp LS3-swapped ND Miata Would Be Like?

This is Flyin Miata’s full LS3 V8 package for the ND Mazda Miata. It costs around $75,000 total, but you get 520hp in a happy car the size of a thimble. Matt Farah, of The Smoking Tire, got to take it for a spin.

Seems like a total riot!

The Lincoln Mark VII LSC Chronicles, Part 1: April and May – Continuing The Story.

Mark VII Front Angle 3

This is Part 1 of an occasional series.

On April 16, as most of you dear readers know, I purchased this big gray Lincoln Mark VII LSC to replace my Miata, which I’d sold to Nick. What most of you don’t know, is the rest of the story. Through this occasional series, I will work to chronicle the past six months of what I’ve done with this gigantic piece of American history, and how it has fit into the other parts of my life in that time. Matt Farah Shows Us His Modded Ford Focus RS

Being a successful car journalist, Matt Farah has been able to get the hookup on modding his Ford Focus RS. It seems like he’s basically maxed out the stock turbo at this point, but just look at the huge gains his car made in the mid range. That’s a ton of usable performance!

Now, he quotes ~350whp, but remember RS’s need to be dynoed in front wheel drive, with the rear diff unplugged. Figure around 10% drivetrain loss for FWD and that shows around 380-390hp at the crank. Now figure around 20-25% drivetrain loss for AWD, and the peak power on the stock turbo (likely on 91 octane) is +/- 300awhp. Not too different from an STI, but please believe a bigger turbo will be a popular mod on the Focus RS for those wanting serious horsepower.

Enjoy!
