Preproduction Cadillac CT6 Spotted on Woodward Avenue

Cadillac CT6 Woodward Ave

We made the trip out to Detroit this weekend for the Concours of the Americas, and we made it a point to hit Woodward Avenue on Saturday night. We saw a bunch of awesome cars out and about, but specifically we saw a few pre-production GM cars running around, including some camo’d zebras. Of note, we saw this pre-production Cadillac CT6, a few of the new Chevy Volts, and a new Cadillac CT6 model with camo over each of its fenders…. presumably a higher performance model with fender flares.

We got a ton of great material this weekend, so stay tuned!

BMW 850CSi Headlights Down Front

It feels like an age ago when I drove my first 8-Series. It was a dilapidated ’97 840Ci with bad brakes and a busted horn–and it felt every bit as rock solid as any BMW I’d ever wheeled around the East Coast. Here we see the polar opposite of that spectrum. BMW put a V12 in the 8-Series coupe, but then pumped it full of whatever stuff found its way into Alex Rodriguez’s bloodstream, and presto, here’s the 850 CSi. Price Game: One Car for Each Day of the Week on a $1 Million Budget

It’s time for the Price Game! So here’s the scenario. You’ve just won the lottery, but you’re being smart with the money. You want to buy every car in sight, but you know a few million doesn’t go that far these days, so better to invest most of it and keep the money coming in over time. To quench your spending thirst, you set aside an even $1,000,000 to play around with, and set your garage up in a manner that befits the new you.

There is also another catch, though. You want to be sure that you actually use all of the cars you buy on a weekly basis, so you elect to by exactly seven cars to play with… one for each day of the week.

So, going around to the various car-selling websites, how would you fill your seven garage slots?

Give your picks in the comments, and check out our selections below!

Nick’s Picks:
2014 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta – $355,000
Front-engine V12 Ferraris are my favorite, and the F12 Berlinetta is the latest, and in many ways the greatest. It is the epitome of modern supercar technology, packaged as a Grand Touring car, but with insane supercar performance.

2016 Volvo XC90 Review: Tell The World You’ve Made Babies In Style!

Volvo XC90 T6 AWD Inscription 1

Why does one need a seven passenger vehicle?

Well, maybe you’re popular and have a lot of friends. Or, perhaps more likely, you haven’t been using condoms, but still won’t pull out before the job is done, because that would be disgracefully un-Patriotic. You wouldn’t want to disappoint Uncle Sam now, would you? Of course not.

But now you find yourself surrounded by screaming little bastards of various sizes, and you need a vehicle that can fit everyone, together, all at once… what joy! The car had better be extra comfortable too, because, with all that screaming in the back, it certainly won’t be easy to relax while you drive.

You could buy a minivan, but that’s just demeaning to your character. I mean you’re clearly an attractive person because you’ve been able to make lots of babies. So why buy a car that will turn you into a shmuck now?

You don’t want to sell out, and the best news is you don’t have to. There are plenty of nice and stylish SUVs out there that you will be delighted to drive the family around in. And Volvo has just brought a formidable new player to the game…

Meet the all-new 2016 Volvo XC90, which is a completely new flavor from the previous XC90. Where the old XC90 was too soccer-mom-ish, maybe a small step up from a minivan, the new XC90 is a suave and luxurious SUV. Eager to compete at the top, it’s new sense of style on the surface also comes with many clever improvements underneath. What we have here might be the most interesting 7 seater on the market.

Driving Impressions

I took a camera along for the ride, so you can see my realtime reactions to the car for yourself.

BMW M5 Review (10/10): The Epitome of the Modern Automobile?

BMW M5 F10 Review 1

I despised this BMW M5 when it came out, but then I drove it and it totally won me over. You see, I had always seen the E39 M5 as the quintessential BMW M5, and in many ways I still do. But I had been defining the M5 as a driver’s car, which is only a part of what it is actually meant to be. The BMW M5 has really always been about being a four-door useable supercar. As supercars have changed over the last decade or so, the BMW M5 has changed along with them.

The F10 generation M5 you see here is the most modern idea of what a four-door supercar should be, and I must admit that it blew my mind with it’s bag-o-tricks.

What’s Good?

It Does More of Everything Now

The original E28 BMW M5 from the 1980s was a practical 5-Series sedan with the engine from the BMW M1 Supercar stuffed under the hood. Sedan practicality with supercar levels of punch, and handling to match. Back then, refinement only really went so far, and there was a trade off between comfort and performance.

Over time, that has become less, and less the case. And now the craziest thing about the M5 is that it is basically a full-fledged luxury cruiser in addition to being a practical supercar.

Looking back to the early 2000s, the E39 M5’s era, the current 5-Series is the same size as the 7-Series was back then. If this M5 were out 10-15 years ago, it would’ve been an M7.

It’s not just the size, though. The M5 can have almost all of the same luxury features available on today’s BMW 7-Series. If it weren’t for the M-Badge and all the extra performance, the M5 would do just fine as an everyday luxury sedan.

Jaguar F-Type R Coupe Review: The Best Luxury Sports Car under $120 grand?

Jaguar F-Type R Coupe Review 1

The Porsche 911 has traditionally been the king of luxury sports cars, but the current generation has become way too expensive and is fairly forgettable. 911 Carrera S models start at $100,000 and can top $150,000 with all the options you want. For that kind of money, don’t you want something with a little more impact?

The 911 is probably as weak as it has ever been right now, and happily, there are many great options that can be had for under $120,000, let alone under $150,000.

The Jaguar F-Type is a relative newcomer, and it has a hell of a lot to offer for very reasonable money.

This is the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, a rear wheel drive one, which sadly will only exist for the 2015 model year. Come 2016, and all V8 F-Types will all be all wheel drive. The plus, longer tire life and more grip… the minus, longer tire life and more grip.

In either RWD or AWD form, though, the V8 Jag F-Type is a hugely desirable car. To the extent that I might argue it’s the best luxury sports car (or “Sports Grand Tourer”) to buy right now, overall.

1934 Duesenberg SJ Rollston Limousine at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours

Duesenberg SJ Limo Front Left

Duesenbergs and Pebble Beach go together like Los Angeles and celebrities. They are genuinely made for one another. Last summer at Pebble, there was a class of five Duesenbergs competing for class prizes. The one here, a 1934 SJ Limousine with coachwork by Rollston, was not an award winner by the book, but has a history for the books, like most Duesies. The Lincoln Continental: Grandpa Irving’s Lincoln, No Longer.

Lincoln Continental Concept Front Angle

Lincoln hasn’t been making dramatic, sexy, or even remotely attention-grabbing cars for some years now. In fact, all of their products since the LS was taken out behind the barn have been rebadged Fords. 9 years of nothing but rebadged Fords and mediocrity. Finally, though, there is hope from the land of Town Cars, Mark Series, and Zephyrs. The new Continental concept is a genuine breath of fresh air from Lincoln–it’s not a reskinned Ford with a toupee. Calling It Early: The Cadillac CT6 is Really the CTS Replacement

Cadillac CT6 Calling It

This isn’t any sort of official “scoop”, more of an educated hunch. But I think I can see a lot of where Cadillac is going to be headed in the next few years from the details of the CT6 alone. This hunch came about when I heard that Cadillac had announced it would be killing off the XTS, CTS, and ATS in the next few years.

You see, everyone seems to think that the CT6 is going to be a BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class competitor, but Now I can see how it won’t be. In fact it is effectively the replacement for both the current CTS and XTS, and it represents an entirely new approach for the Cadillac brand. One which they will be expanding upon in the coming years. Here is how I have come to this idea.

  1. The CT6 has the same engine options as the CTS and BMW 5 Series, not a BMW 7 Series
  2. Nobody is going to pay $70k for the 4-banger CT6, so it will need to overlap the CTS’s pricing.
  3. It may have many similar dimensions to a 7 Series, but it weighs the same as a 5 series
  4. Cadillac keeps claiming their S-Class and 7 Series competitor is still to come. So the CT6 has to be lower.

What we can pull from this is not only that the CT6 is really the CTS successor, but also Cadillac’s new approach to making cars…. and that is “Bigger and Better.”

Look at the Cadillac CT6 compared to the BMW 5 Series. It weighs the same, it will have similar prices, and, with similar engines, will have similar performance. But the CT6 also offers cabin space and many luxury features generally reserved the class above. With the CT6, Cadillac is offering a BMW 5 Series rival, but with the luxury of a BMW 7 Series. It is literally bigger and better than a 5er.

I think Cadillac will apply this approach to all of their new models, offering luxury and space that is above the norm for each segment. It completely explains their obsession with making their cars light weight, so they can offer more tangible size than the competition, without sacrificing performance or fuel economy.

The ATS and CTS have both received complaints for being too small for their class, in terms of cabin space. Plainly, being cramped has never been the Cadillac way. That is probably why they are saying there will be no direct successors to the CTS and ATS, because those models are “Smaller and Better”, not “Bigger and Better.”

We can likely expect the effective ATS replacement to be called the CT4, and likely be around the size of a BMW 5 Series with the weight of a 3 Series. The CT6 is basically replacing the CTS, as explained above. Finally, the Big Daddy Caddy will likely dubbed the CT8. It should offer Rolls Royce and Bentley levels of luxury for the price of a BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class.

Why hasn’t Cadillac just called the CT6 the CTS’s replacement? Because they just brought out the new CTS two years ago, and they’d still like to be able to sell them. It’s common knowledge that you don’t badmouth your own product. That’s what us bloggers are for, to call things as they are.

If I’m right, and this new “Bigger and Better” approach is for real, then Cadillac is back!

The Cadillac CT6 just told you to Go Home and Get ya F***ing Shinebox!

Cadillac CT6 Front

If Cadillac has any chance of surviving as a luxury brand on this Earth, they needed a flagship.  The XTS is a rental queen that’s only here so they have something to sell to livery fleets that’s FWD.  The CTS is nice, but too small to be a true flagship.  Luckily for us, GM had an ace in its hand–the new Omega platform.  Cadillac’s been teasing us since 2011 for a flagship model to launch, and now, that day has come.   Welcome, and welcome all, to the new Cadillac CT6. Our Highlights From the 2015 New York International Auto Show

NYIAS 2015 Empire State Building

We went to the 2015 New York International Auto Show this past weekend to get up close with all of the cars we’ve been hearing so much about and commenting on in the last few months.  NYIAS is always a fantastic time, but this year was the best it has been in 10 years. The show is a bit of a tradition for us to do with our friends, and this year we chose to forgo the press days so we could go with the group. I’ll admit up front that we didn’t get to everything that was at the show, but we had a blast with everyone. Here are our highlights and opinions on the cars we saw.

Tesla’s Ticket Avoidance Mode (April Fools, but we wish not)

Tesla released their 691hp Model S P85D with an “Insane Mode.” Any company that would be so honestly bold with their products definitely has a sense of humor. Now the Model S can actually drive itself, and to highlight the car’s capability they released their new “Ticket Avoidance Mode” on April 1st. A gag, surely, but how great would it be if it were a real feature of the car?
