Highlights From the 2015 Greenwich Concours Day 2

On Day 2 of this year’s Greenwich Concours d’Elegance we were blessed with a sudden downpour that made everyone run for cover. However, it also covered all of the immaculate cars in some beautiful water droplets, making for some wonderful photos. Rain and clouds also really make the colors “pop”, so I actually prefer it to direct sunlight for shooting cars. I’d imagine that the gentleman in the silver Porsche RSK Spyder (below) might disagree, though.

There were some truly beautiful cars displayed on Day 2, including that bright yellow/green Lamborghini Miura you see above – we saw him driving around on the streets of Greenwich before the show, and promptly lost bowel control. Thankfully we all had a change of pants in the car.

I should also point out that the green Ferrari Daytona Spider (seen below) is the only one ever made in that color, so one of the rarest examples of an already rare car. The Pagani Huayra was also said to be “one of one”, but every Pagani is built custom to order, so every other Huayra is equally “one of one” – people just love to toot their own horn, I guess, but an incredible car for either way. (My Subaru is “one of one” too, if you count it’s unique stone chips)

I thought last year’s Greenwich Concours was the best in recent memory, but this one just may have topped it. There’s more to come from the event, but enjoy looking through our highlight gallery of Day 2!

Our Highlights From the 2015 Greenwich Concours Day 1

The Greenwich Concours was nothing short of epic this year. There were insane cars in attendance of all types, and it was thoroughly entertaining to cover. This year there were a few European exotics mixed in with the American cars on Day 1. I’m not sure why, but it made a nice spectacle.

Of note, Jim Glickenhaus brought out his one of a kind Ferrari 330 P3/4 (above), two Pagani Huayras showed up, and the Packard 8 that won Day 1 was just immaculate.

1935 Packard Model 1201 – Greenwich Concours d’America Best Of Show 2015

Welcome to the Best Of Show winner for Day 1 of the 2015 Greenwich Concours. Ralph Marano of Scotch Plains, NJ is one of the most prolific collectors of Packard motorcars from the 1930s until the end of the brand in 1958. His collection is incredible and we here at Mind Over Motor are proud to say that we’ve seen multiple pieces of his collection a few times over the past 17 months, including a full display of his Packard concept cars at Amelia Island last spring. This, however, might be my favorite prewar Packard in his collection.

This is a 1935 Model 1201 convertible, in a gorgeous brown paint job that seems to look black or green in certain lights. My friend Chris couldn’t stop talking about it, and for good reason–it was the winner of Best of Show amongst all of the American cars on the field. The forged wheel covers looked stunning on this Art-Deco body, especially when paired with the Firestone white-letter style tires and the scalloped rear fender covers. It’s not a hulking behemoth like some of the other prewar American cars featured this year, but the 1201 took home the honors for its elegant lines and distinctive style. Enjoy the photos. Spotting from Memorial Day Weekend in Rehoboth Beach, DE

I just got back from an awesome but exhausting Memorial Day Weekend getaway on the Delaware Shore with my girlfriend and family. Piggybacking off of the Ford Bronco from Saturday, I want to share some other great cars we saw while out and about. Rehoboth Beach is a lively town, with lots of interesting cars running around. These are what I was able to catch with my phone.

I should also mention that I did see a Ferrari 599 GTB as well as a Mercedes SLR McLaren parked in driveways in a ritzy neighborhood along the coast, but I couldn’t get pics, unfortunately.

My favorite has the be the Ford Thunderbird, featured above. We saw it roll through town later on the same evening, and the thing was a total show-stopper. Below, we saw a Land Rover Defender, Mercedes SL63 AMG and Dodge Viper GTS, respectively.

2015 Elks Lodge Car Show (Lodge 2414) General Gallery

This past Saturday, I was in a conundrum. I knew that the local Elks Lodge up the street was putting on a car show, but I wasn’t sure if they’d let me put my Miata in the show. I decided to just drive it over and see what would happen. I was the first guy to show up in an imported car (there was already a Toyota Truck in the show) but they let me in for a few bucks and I gladly obliged, hiding the Miata, in all its scratched-up, four-cylinder glory, in between a few Corvettes. For my efforts, I was rewarded third in class for import cars–which came with a nice $25 gift certificate to the local Italian establishment, Mama Rosina’s.

In all, this was a very well-done show. While the variety of cars was a bit limited, the people made this a very friendly, neighborhood-type show, with people from all over the local area coming out to show off their best cars. We had everything from a 1956 Bel Air (that was all original and awaiting restoration) to a late-model Maserati GranTurismo, C7 Stingray, and a 2014 Super Snake that shook the ground on startup. 1969 Plymouth Hemi Roadrunner at the 2015 Boca Raton Concours

When it comes to the Plymouth Road Runner, it’s hard for me to ignore even the ones that don’t look very loud–because the plain-Jane appearance of the ones that look quiet disguises the screamer that lies underneath the skin. The case of this triple-black ’69 model is a study in that field, as it packs the monster motor that muscle cars like me lust after–the 426 Hemi.

Plymouth had a hit on its hands with the Road Runner. It was rather inexpensive for its time (starting at around 3 grand, a low price for a muscle car) but offered the 426 as an option for those with the wallet and the guts to handle what Mopar guys have referred to as the “Elephant Motor”. This particular car was found as a race car and restored back to stock specifications. Not only that, but it won its class at Boca and looked pretty intimidating in the process. Petrolicious: Sir Stirling Moss and the Mercedes 300 SLR 722

In another serious gem of a video by Petrolicious, we are taken back to the 1955 Mille Miglia with non other than Sir Stirling Moss himself, who won the race with his Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR #722.

This was really the golden era of racing when everything was still allowed to be excessively dangerous. The Mille Miglia, a one thousand mile race on the public streets of Italy, was probably the most notorious race of the age. Moss finished the race in just 10 hours and 7 minutes setting the all time record for the race, which has never been beaten.

You have to understand the context to appreciate the enormity of his achievement, and to appreciate just how awesome a car the Mercedes 300 SLR is, even by modern standards. Officially, the roads were all closed, but Italy being Italy, that meant absolutely nothing. So it was basically a 1000 mile sanctioned street race, dodging trucks and much slower pedestrian traffic. The speeds were also no joke either, 150-160mph was routinely reached by Moss in his SLR, and he even talks about getting airborne at those speeds. Also keep in mind that this was all back in the mid 1950s with tire and braking technology from the era. Most modern cars, with modern technology, cannot stop or maneuver well at 160mph, but the 300 SLR could do it back then… at least well enough that it is still in one piece.

Enjoy this video. Moss is one of the most legendary drivers of all time, and the 300 SLR is probably the most epic car Mercedes-Benz has ever made.

The Beach Boys are a cornerstone of American pop culture. They recorded tracks about surfing, motorbikes, muscle cars, drag racing, beaches, meeting women on the beach, and were generally the representation of American pop culture for the early part of the 1960s. They sang about America in the same way the Beatles did so about England–and made a worldwide reach. However, one of their tracks, “409”, was the one that stuck into my head as a kid back in 2002. Arguably the holy grail of classic Japanese cars, this Nissan Skyline 2000GT-R “Hakosuka” Race Car is so “O.G. JDM” that I can barely contain myself!

This was the first generation of Nissan Skyline GT-R, and a far cry from the modern R35 Nissan GTR. The “Hakosuka” Skyline 2000GT-R was extremely successful in racing, with over 50 victories in just 2 years. Then, in 1973, the Mazda RX-3 took the Skyline’s crown as top dog on the Japanese racing circuit.

“Hakosuka” Skylines are really gaining in value now, with a road version selling the same weekend at the RM Auction for $242,000. We saw a few other classic Skyline GT-Rs in Monterey this year, but this racing car in the pits of Laguna Seca really stood out for us. Along with the Toyota 2000GT, this is classic JDM royalty!

Duesenbergs and Pebble Beach go together like Los Angeles and celebrities. They are genuinely made for one another. Last summer at Pebble, there was a class of five Duesenbergs competing for class prizes. The one here, a 1934 SJ Limousine with coachwork by Rollston, was not an award winner by the book, but has a history for the books, like most Duesies.
